Upgrade from AMD to Intel

Hello everyone,

here are the specs of my current pc: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/mmBwTW

I want to upgrade my cpu to intel to alleviate the bottleneck I have currently from my fx 6300. I'm torn between either the 6600k or the 4790k. Obviously the 6600k is the newer platform and uses DDR4. However, with the 4790k I would have hyper-threading and I could reuse my current ram, potentially saving a little money. I use my pc for gaming, music production, and a little video editing here and there (although not that often). Also I do plan to overclock.

My main concern is that if I go for the 4790k it will become obsolete quicker than the 6600k. But I also think I could potentially benefit from the extra threads. I need this cpu to last me for at least 4 years. Which should I go for?

a 4790k will not go obsolete in 4 years

Skylake doesn't offer that much more in performance in games over Haswell, it will take years for your 4790K to become obsolete, 2600K are still good CPUs for gaming when paired with high frequency RAM and a good overclock.

if you gonna change this setup in 4 years go with the 4790k, cheaper and it will serve you for the next 4 years good

 

on the other hand as future upgrades considered maybe 6600k would be better

think about how much you will be able to spend then.

You'll definitely get better performance from the 4790k and you can still get a lot of life out of it. That being said, I think you will likely end up updating to a DDR4 platform eventually so I don't think buying the DDR4 since you're upgrading your base platform anyway wouldn't be considered a waste.

Do you need to upgrade now? AMD Zen looks good

I am aware of the 6700k, however my budget is around $400 - $450. The cost of a 6700k, a motherboard, and new ram is a bit too expensive. 

 

And I am wanting to do this upgrade within the next month, so I don't think I'll be waiting for zen.

Also, in about 4 years I'll be done with university and should have the funds to build a new rig from scratch.

They never really released any high performance ivy bridge Xeons, at least none worthy of an upgrade from the 3770k. 

 

Sometimes the CPU generation will have high performance Xeon's that are thousands when they release and a couple years down the road you can get one dirt cheap. 

 

On the 1366 I started with a 920 and a couple years down the line a hexacore Xeon with over twice the performance results was available for less than $100.

2690 v2? And they had a 3770k equivalent, the 1230 v2 if memory serves. There were a decent amount of high-end xeons. Also, 4790k. It's not going to be obsolete for a long ass time.

Lol, that is technically what it means. It's also a song by the metal band The Faceless, that's the main reason I used it as my name.

The 2690 v2 is on a different socket. I didn't really mention it, but I meant getting one of the same generation, so you can just replace the processor without having to get a new mobo.  There's not really a worthy upgrade from 3770k on 1155(in my opinion).

If money is an issue, have you considered the i5-4690k?  It is even less expensive, at about $220, and frankly just as fast as the i5-6600k in most respects.

 

The real question is, "is the i7-4790k worth $100 more than the i5-4690k?"

 

Gaming?  No, not even close.

 

Content creation?  Yes, by miles and miles and miles, assuming you do a decent amount of it.  Editing two videos a month is not "a decent amount of it" however...  editing a video every day?  Yes, totally worth it.

 

Haswell Refresh likely won't be an option much longer, but if budget is a concern, then by all means, get it while you can, and the choice of i5 vs i7 comes down to "gaming vs content creation".

As far as content creation goes, I do produce music on my pc. I work on that at least 4-5 times per week. I also do video editing from time to time, but probably only once every few months.

I say if all you plan to do is gaming then go for the i5 but if not i7 is better!
