Wow I havent even heard about this, this would actually be really cool if this came out but it would probably be atleast double the price of a normal console.

I can't find any official Sony word on the matter at this time, so I definitely would not take any of this as confirmation. Most of the news sources seem pretty sure Sony is working on some kind of upgrade to the PS4, but no one seems to know what it actually is yet. It could be a whole new console, an upgrade to the PS4 (like the Sega 32X?), or something else entirely.

The whole idea of Sony feeling the need to release a console that renders at 4K sounds very questionable to me. For one, it would need as much as quadruple the graphics performance to render a scene at 4K that the PS4 renders at 1080p, all else being equal. That's huge, that might even be bigger than a generational improvement. And even if it's possible with current tech I shudder to imagine what it would cost.

Secondly, how many people (console gamers in particular) even own a 4K display? On a 1080p television or monitor, this "upgrade" will basically be like Nvidia DSR on the PC: very slick antialiasing from downscaling, and that's about it.

It's 99,99999% a PS4 hardware revision that makes the device able to play UHD Blu-Rays and Streams, it's very very very very very unlikely that this thing plays games at 3840x2160 unless they're upscaled from 1080p.

Maybe even with a built in box for PSVR.

A PS4 that gets native 4K games (other than a PacMan/Tetris Remaster), unless people want to pay $1500+ for a console with an incredibly huge, hot and power hungry APU, won't happen.

144Hz goodness

With graphic cards out now quadrupling a PS4 Graphics card isn't hard but it will be more then the 399 the ps4 launched at i could see them going for like $600 ish they really just need a 970/390 maybe a little more to run 4k at high 30fps or close to the settings ps4 runs games at in 1080p  might be using something custom from AMDs new line or nividias new line that would help costs heat and wattage also they could take a loss on the console by a bit as the PS4 and Xbox one were the some of the first consoles they actually didnt straight up loose a good sum on

I do agree  its more likely that its a regular refresh with small differences maybe 4k blurays and upscaled games being high on the possible list but on the other hand PS4 is pretty weak for VR and

4k 30fps at the same settings ps4 plays 1080p games at is no where near 1500 dollars at all... a 970 and 390 which can go for 250 if your looking for a deal can do this and obviously Sony would buy it cheaper but on top of that it would probably be based off the new GPUs coming out and changing resolution for 1080p to 4k doesnt affect CPU usage much so the rest of the system cost shouldn't be crazy more either also it being a few years since the last CPU they should be able to get more power for same price

Right, in terms of where we are with graphics cards, this can be done relatively easily with a full-power PCIe board with a real cooler attached. But the problem is that, being a console, this probably has to be done using a power-limited SoC design. I'm not sure we're at a point where you can get PS4 visuals and PS4 performance at 3840x2160 from an SoC affordable for the mainstream gamer.

1500 was a bit exaggerated, but a Polaris/Zen APU (I don't think they'll go the CPU/dedicated GPU route this time either) will probably be way pricier.

Also, a 970 for 250? Not where I live...

Lots of speculation in here. Ever heard of something called punctuation?

i don't think they'll go full on dedicated GPU either it most likely will be a custom designed APU. The 970 price was an example of how a semi decent price point can be reached at least in the US where since Pricing of hardware is much cheaper we don't learn punctuation and just mindlessly stare at the tv/computer while downing a supersized meal from McDonalds Good Old USA

it would be awesome id it could play 1080p60fps, I don't care about 4k but 60 fps in the next gen would be noice. 60 FPS isn't even hard to achive on high settings on the pc so why shouldn't there be a console that can do it?
