Help with new build for Animation, Graphic Design, & Video Editing...

Marko9999

Hey guys,

I´m building  a new PC. I basically need it for software like Photoshop, Toon Boom Harmony, maybe some 3D work and Video editing in the future.

I´m having trouble deciding what motherboard and Gpu to buy. I don't need it for gaming and I'm not an overclocker.

So far this is what i've bought:

CPU: Intel i7 4790k

Case: Aerocool Battlehawk

PSU: EVGA 500w 80 plus

Ram: 16Gb hyper X Fury (2x 8gb)

Storage: Samsung SSD 250Gb

Data Storage: 1Tb Seagate HDD Barracuda 3.5

GPU: ???

Motherboard: Possibly Asus Z97-A

Any recomendations for gpu and motherboard? Also, I think the stock cooler would be enough for what I need, although I´m not completely sure.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Have you actually bought the items listed?

Do you have a part number for the memory?

An unlocked cpu like the i7-4790K is intended for overclocking. It makes sense then to pair it with a Z97 motherboard.

Photoshop can use the gpu to accelerate editing functions. Budget will ultimately decide the optimal choice. A GTX 970 would be fine, a GTX 980 Ti would be best.

80+ ratings certify electrical efficiency. Not quality.

Should go skylake for USB 3.1

includes a workstation GPU, just cuz. you could probably live without the GPU entirely

Your main focus is going to want to be on your display set up, something large and 4k for productivity, and then a side 1080p display that's color accurate

Yes, I've bought what I've listed. I know the cpu is intended for overclocking, and even though I've never done it, I'd like to have the option in case I decide to do it in the future. The part number for the hyper x memory is cl10?

CL10 is part of the timing specification. The Kingston Fury part number will look something like HX424C15FB/16. But don't worry about it. It is moot since you have bought it.

The extra VRAM from the 390 is going to be more useful for 3D modeling

I was thinking the same thing about the psu. But I checked the power requirements on the website Linus recommended and it seemed ok. After all, most work will be semi professional, and as a hobby.

My budget is around 800-900usd

Ad I've said before, I've already bought what I've listed. I would assume it's pretty decent for the time being.

Should really return that PSU in any case, probably going for the EVGA 650W above

Well, I seem to be on the right track with the ASUS Z97a. The PSU on the other hand... haha. How much power do I actually need for what I want?

You just don't want a sub par PSU, return everything if possible though...

It is not so much a question of the capacity as the quality of the delivered power and longevity of the components. Although 500W is on the tight side for most higher-end AMD gpu builds.
