Building a Router - Hardware/Software Suggestions?

Hello Everyone!

I am very new to the forum and looking for some good advice.

I am looking to build computer that will be loaded with PFsense. It will serve as my router. I have +30 devices running on my internet continuously using bandwidth, so I thought this would be a good investment even though I already have a $200 ASUS router.

Goals:

- Build capable of connecting and maintaining +40 devices in the future.

- Super reliability

- Lowest wattage possible (fast hardware with good power performance?)

My questions:

- Is PFsense a good choice? What other network software is out there?

- What CPU/other hardware would you recommend for such a job? I've read a bit. I know it doesn't take much, but I want to make good decisions.

Thanks!

Yes pfSense will do a great job. You just have to read a bit for the set-up and the config.

CPU wise, any old CPU will do. Mobo and LAN is what you'll have to look out for. Read up on the compatible device lift from pfSense for good parts.
