Commute from home and back: few hours

Already have a good desktop.

Thinking about this as the specs aren't out of this world but the quality is

Here's a list of all the laptops with 8gb of RAM, with either core i5 or i7 under $1200 USD.

Can you give more desired specs and budget?

I'm getting the Acer Aspire R13 because I'm kind of an artist and it fits the bill for both a traditional laptop, as well as a comfortable tablet. It also has a TB3 port so I can use an eGPU if those ever happen

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B015PYZ0J6/?tag=portablepicker-20 i7, 960m, 8gbs of ram, and more stuff you'd like for less than 1k.  That gives you room to get an ssd if you wanted.  lol

Or the SSD version: http://www.amazon.com/Dell-Inspiron-i7559-763BLK-Full-HD-GeForce/dp/B015PYYDMQ/ref=sr_1_2?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1458593592&sr=1-2&keywords=Dell+Inspiron+i7559

Which I have and LOVE. Got it on black friday :)

I have the Dell Inspiron 13 - 7000 series special edition. I went with the top tier version. Touch screen 2-in-1, 256gb SSD, i7, overall very pleased with it. Perfect for class work.

I highly doubt you'll do anything with CAD that Intel GPU can't handle. It might be pushing it, but nothing horrible. Usually professors understand that not everyone has a GeForce 970 in their computer, let alone a Quadro card, something you prefer to get for actual large CAD work.

If you want everything computerized, my recommendation, as a recent Computer Science grad, get a Surface Pro.

The fact that you can type your noted, and comes a graph or mathematical formula and you can just write it with the pen, is god send. At least it was to me. I even put all my math classes in it. All thanks to OneNote, a software I STRONGLY suggest to look into if you are not familiar with it. It is the best note taking software you can find. And no, this is bias remark, look it up.

TBH, since I was able to use CAD programs without problems on a Quadro NVS110M (weaker than the HD4600 in my 4790K-by far) under Windows 7 with a Core Duo T2600 (latter on a T7600 for 64bit Windows 7, but the laptop was hard locked to 3.25GB RAM so it was pointless), a Surface Pro-which in all reality will have a better CPU than my old laptop and a far more powerful GPU as well while also having really good battery life. Just to clarify, my old laptop was a Toshiba Tecra M5 "ultraportable" work station (with expansion dock+secondary battery+12 cell extended battery).
