Z97, worth keeping it?

I do have the following question:

Is z97 still doing the job? And should I upgrade to an i7?

Let me give some background information:

I currently own an Asus Gryphon Z97M board with an i5 4570, paired with two GTX780s with terrible microstuttering, thanks to my CPU (I believe). I also have 16GB (soon 32GB) of HyperX RAM.

My idea was now to upgrade to an i7 4790k. Is this a good idea? And yes I will overclock the CPU (have a Kraken X61 for cooling)

Or should I sell my MoBo, Ram and CPU and go for sonething new? (5820k or 6700k)

 

Typical workload: gaming (1440p) or web browsing, sometines ArcGIS (geographical application).

 

No help needed the GPU, I will upgrade them to a 980ti or FuryX or something like 1080ti

The microstuttering is probably SLI playing up. Your CPU is perfectly fine and Z97 is a looong way from being dead.

Haswell is still a very viable choice. The performance gains from Skylake are minimal. I'd go for it.

Even if you're on the now dated Ivy & Sandybridge CPUs, they're worth keeping as the increment of upgrade between i7-2xxx, 3xxx, 4xxx, 5xxx, 6xxx by itself isn't really all that much. Something like the 4790k is still a super relevent and good option for a CPU, remember that if you were to upgrade from your 4570 to a 6700k or 6600k, you'd need a new motherboard, ram and CPU.

 

If you feel the upgrade itch, get a 4570k, 4590k, 4770k or 4790k.
