Hi all,

just got my r9 380 a few days ago and I used MSI afterburner to overclock it. So I went a bit to high. No biggie, just reset the clock speeds and try again. But whenever I go into a game and the GPU reaches around 75-100% load, the screen goes blank. Any ideas??

any help would be appreciated

cheers,

hman out B|

If an overclock goes wrong, you sometimes will need to reboot the system. Resetting the overclock does not always "fix" the issue.

In your case with the BSOD, try reinstalling your graphics drivers. Please don't be lazy like the other people; uninstall, reboot, install, and reboot.

Rant:

Spoiler

I had always done the:

  • Uninstall drivers
  • Check log, and reboot system
  • Install drivers
  • Check log, and reboot system

...and I had never had to use DDU, clean up the registry, reinstall Windows....since the Radeon HD 2000 series days. I see a lot of people run into issues -- especially when they DO NOT reboot the system, even when a pop-up message box asks you. They just ignore it.

It will take you an extra 30 seconds ~ 1 minute (or shorter with SSD's these days). This is better than spending a few hours, or days, if not WEEKS, trying to troubleshoot a stupid issue...because your Windows install decided to hate you...all because you didn't restart your system after a driver install.

Anyone??

It's difficult to help you out right away due to different time zones. There is like a 14 hour difference between you and me.

What is the rest of your system specifications -- other than a R9-380 GPU??

How are your temperatures?

Do the games you pointed out have multi-core support?

What do you mean by freezing up; like stuttering?

If your R9-380 is paired with your Intel Pentium E5200, then your Processor is most likely holding the graphics card back -- a "bottleneck."

EDIT: I just noticed, by look at your old posts, that you are using the E5200 with your R9-380. WarThunder is an MMO-style game, so your Processor is holding you back on the overall gaming performance.

Motherboard: Gigabyte G31M-S2L V2.0

PSU: Cooler master iGreen power 600w

graphics card: XFX Radeon R9 380

CPU: E5200@4.0Ghz (60%OC)

HDD: WD 320GB 7200RPM

OS: Windows 10

All the games have multicore support

My GPU temp is around 20c idle and 52c under load

my CPU temperature is 39c idle and around 65-70c under load

if it is because of a bottleneck, I'll probably get a better LGA775 CPU like a core2quad q9650

thanks for the help so far

cheers,

That's what it looks like -- especially for BeamNG.Drive.

It seems a little over the top, but that game recommends:

  • High-end Intel i5/i7 or AMD Six-Core CPU
  • 8GB of RAM
  • GTX 780

While the minimum is a Core i3 (dual-core, four threads).

Your R9-380 is just a tiny step or two below the GTX 780, so it shouldn't be an issue.

A LGA 775 Core2Quad should put a bit more life into your system, though.

You probably won't be able to play the games on Ultra / Maximum settings, but High or mix of Medium-High should be doable with a decent LGA 775 Quad-Core.

Good luck!

Monitor your GPU and CPU usage.

With that 775 dual core, I'm pretty sure your CPU can't handle GPU and that's causing lagg.

Use afterburner to check your frametime. Usually while gaming you should have under 30ms frametime.

In your case I belive you will be able to see spikes to 100ms and above. If that's the case, you'll need better CPU.
