MSI Z97 Gaming 5 with Astro mixamp?

Hi,

I recently got my new motherboard, the MSI Z97 Gaming 5. The problem with it is that it doesnt has got an Optical Port. The Astro mixamp used to connect with my pc with the optical port, wich i dont have right now.

Im connecting my A40 via a 3.5mm audio jack to my pc.

So i looked up some cheap 5.1 soundcards and i came across the "Asus Xonar DG", it has an optical port and it is 5.1 dolby. Is it going to be any good? Am i realy getting that 5.1 with this soundcard?

just hook your headphones up to your pc and don't bother to use a bad mixamp or buying a sound card. Why do you even need 5.1? The headphones are stereo and the only 5.1 or 7.1 you can get in them are virtual and you might as well just download dolby virtual surround or razer surround.

Before you buy amp and dac.  My thoughts on the M50x  Ultimate Ears Reference monitor review I might have a thing for audio...

You aren't getting 5.1 with a mixamp, you aren't getting 5.1 with ANY headset/headphone. If you want 5.1, you need to invest in a speaker system. That said, positional audio is just fine with Stereo(2.0). Playing on a low-rank alt account with a friend in CSGO is a great example for the garbage that is game brand headsets that are "5.1/7.1", I get to play with people who can't understand where the enemy is coming from despite them charging like a rhino and it being heard by myself over a long distance, but don't worry, my teammate is simply looking the other direction like a tard.

"Do you have your sound off?"

"WTF NO! I have Razer Tiamat 7.1 you noob!"

Typically the response I get from the dipshits.

I just got that answer from a little 12-13 year old boy I just said:
Ohhh I will just go cry with my 1100€ headphones and hear where everyone is coming from.
Then he got super mad while the whole team where laughing at him.

I love making salty(mad) kids even more mad.

If you just need an optical SPDIF output, buy the cheapest card that has it at the bit depth and sample rate you need.. Sound quality starts at the DAC, optical is just a way of transmitting data.

PC: Intel i5-4690K @ 4.6 GHz, 1.296v, Air 24/7 -- Windforce R9 270 @ 1200/1400 -- MSI Z87-GD65 -- 16GB DDR3-1866 -- Samsung 850 Evo 250GB

Audio: Thiel CS1.2 Speakers -- Tripath Amps -- CS4398 DACs -- MiniDIGI 2x8 Active Crossover/DSP --  Stereo Bass via 2x Vifa 10", Linkwitz Transform'd to 25hz -3db

You call yourself TheAudiophile, but are you a good one or a F up one?

On the hardware side of things, I'm right. Any cheap card that has a SPDIF out will be fine, unless it's a faulty design or not working properly. Same as HDMI -- it's just a digital data transmission method.

Unless you're just looking for an argument about sound quality starting with file type on the software side, in which case I'm not going to indulge you.
