Opinions on X99 build

Hello folks, Please have a look at my parts list for my PC build.

This PC will be used for gaming, web-browsing and HTPC.

I will have it connected to two displays. 1080p TV (upgrading to 4K soon) and the other display will be ultrawide monitor 3440 x 1440.

What are your thoughts on this build. also considering going z170 route if MSI godlike Carbon motherboard is not released soon.

Unless you're going 4-way SLI, there's no reason to get the 5930K over the 5820K for its more PCIe lanes. Save the cash and go for the 5820K.

Overkill PSU for one 980Ti, a 650W would be fine. 850W for two. I recommend the EVGA SuperNOVA 650 G2/P2.

The real reason for the build is when I was researching I was under the impression that x99 is the the top tier chip/ best of the best and I would be future proofing but doing more searching it looks like that the 6700k would be better for my needs and being the PC will be running all day for HTPC as it woud consume less power.

Yes I understand that I can save some money by changing some of the components but I dont think I will go that route.

another reason Im doing this is for the looks of it in the Lian LI PC08. I would like for it to be a showpiece PC.

No I dont think I will even do two way SLI anytime soon, but might add another pcie ssd. And about the PSU, going by what everybody says on dont cheap out on the PSU,  would like it to be the most efficient like platinum certified.

You should still be fine with another PCIe SSD. You won't need that many PCIe lanes.

I think you're taking the 'don't cheap out on the PSU' a bit too far. A gold certified PSU like the EVGA SuperNOVA G2 650 would be still a perfectly fine choice. However, if you still insist, the EVGA SuperNOVA 650 P2 is the platinum rated edition of the G2. Assuming you're based in America, you can net it off NCIX US for $69.99.

X99 supports quad channel memory. You might consider getting a 4x4GB or 4x8GB memory kit.

80+ psu ratings are not an indication of quality. They specify electrical efficiency.

1000W seems awfully large for a system that will not have multiple gpu. You might consider something a bit smaller. While something around 650W would do, I might be tempted to consider an 850W in case a second gpu was desired at some point in the future. The Corasir RM 850i is an excellent unit as are the EVGA 220-G2-0850-XR and (almost as good) EVGA 220-P2-0850-X1. Individually sleeved cable sets are available for all of these psu in various colors.

Yes I will be adding more ram later on, and I am reconsidering the psu. Will leave the cable sleeves for another day.

You probably won't want a TV for gaming, and I mean buy 3 like 40-50" 4k displays, at least that's what I'd do before maxing out your PC, you'll probably have the displays a lot longer than that PC

Buying a quad channel memory kit assures quad channel operation. There is a small chance that quad channel operation will not be possible when adding a second dual channel kit. Besides, the motherboard has 8 memory slots, even with a quad channel kit there remains room for another kit. Another consideration is that XMP profiles are based on kit capacity.

These are the ones I wanted to get. 16 GB 2 x 8GB $100.00

if I was to add another set of the same at a later time wouldnt it be considered quad-channel?

Cant have that setup in the living room. dont think it will even fit on the desk. how many gpu's would be needed to run 3 4k displays for gaming?

I believe he used a single 980ti, you're going to be gaming at 1920x1080*3 in most games, but rocket league was playable at 4k*3

Adding a second identical kit will likely allow for quad channel operation. But this is not guaranteed.

thank you for that. Im in the process of ordering the ram but not sure of the optimal set. ultimately I would like to end up with 32GB of ram in the system but starting with 16GB.

The question is is it still quad channel if I place 4 sticks spaced throughout the 8 DIM slots? thinking spacing will help in heat dissipation.

To achieve quad channel operation one must locate the four sticks exactly as required by the motherboard. Typically there are four slots in alternating colors on either side of the motherboard. One generally installs one stick in each of the same color slot to achieve quad channel operation. On any motherboard I have used with 4 sticks this separates them by one slot each.

But this is moot since DDR4 memory modules do not generate much waste heat.

The motherboard user manual can be downloaded from the product web pages. It contains diagrams for possible multi-channel memory configurations.
