About a year ago, i bought a Seagate 1TB SSHD. First time I used it, it gave me no error when it died about 6 months of use. I sent it back, and got a replacement for it. A 1TB SSHD since thats all they would send back. Now, about 6 months later, its still working, yet i've noticed it has a loud click every so often. Like I can hear it in my laptop slightly clicking when im copying data from and external, but when im not copying and just typing a word doc, browsing the web, playing a game, it makes a rather loud CLICK. It does that for a little bit and then stops for awhile, and then it starts back up again. Is this drive broken? or failing?

it's most likely the heads parking and motor stopping based on the HDD power settings

But it click for a little bit loudly, and then it stops. I dont even need to be doing anything, or could be doing something, and it randomly clicks loudly

Its probably the seek head failing, and you notice it most when the disc is doing a lot of read/write operations. I would look at replaceing it asap.

the random clicks could just be the read head moving onto the platter then resting again.

If it does happen do be a drive failure again then get a whole new drive. Maybe try Western Digital drives.

Hey there,

I would recommend using the manufacturer's diagnostic tool and see if the drive passes the tests. If it does it should be rendered safe to use. Have in mind that if your system is rather quiet you may head the read/write head hover and park once in a while.
You can also check the raw values of the S.M.A.R.T. status and see if the can show you some useful info. Feel free to post them here if you are not sure how to read them.

Hello I've recently upgraded my PC and moved my WD green 2Tb from my old rig to my new one and it started to make a Geiger Counter noise especially on higher loads, It literally only started doing this after the upgrade. Any suggestions on what it could be?

Hey there Patrykpo :) Welcome to the community!

I'd first check if the drive is mounted properly and well in the drive cage. It may be resonating with the case on higher loads due to loose screws or loose cables.

I'd also backup everything important as such noises might be an indication that the drive is failing. Then it's a good idea to download and run WD Data Lifeguard Diagnostic tool and see if the drive passes the quick and the extended tests. This should rule the drive as safe or not.
I'd also try the drive with anothe SATA port, cable or on a whole different computer and see if the sounds persist.

Post back with some feedback :)

Okay so while doing the test I've encountered a interesting phenomenon... for some reason my Corsair CX500M started to sound like a dying hand drill ... I've had this on my previous CX500 but on both a slightly savage beating seems to fix it... this is probably unrelated ... any ideas?

If physical influence seems to help it may be some hardware issue within the PSU itself. I'd take it to a technician and see if anything needs to be changed inside such as a capacitor or if there's a loose cable or something else wrong with the motor of the fan.

It may be connected to the drive if the PSU is not providing adequate or stable power to the drive. I'd test the system with another PSU and see if there are any changes. :)

I'm glad to hear that! I'd still run the diagnostic tools to make sure the drive is completely safe to store your data!
