The 860k is the better choice here. It has a higher IPC and performs better. From what i've heard it also performs better. He will also be able to upgrade to desktop carrizo if he want.

Yes. it runs hotter, needs more power and is less powerfull compared to the 860K

By a small margin only.

 

The multicore and singlecore scores are better on the X4 and looking at benchmarks only, you are getting a little more for your money...

Limited differences in everyday usage though

carrizo is the code name for the architecture used in AMD's SOC's. It's basically an evolution of the steamroller architecture used in the 860k ( which itself is an evolution of piledriver for the fx 4300 ). It has about a 10% higher ipc than steamroller (860k) , and uses less power .

 

Desktop chips using carrizo aren't out yet . That will be the athlon x4 845.
