I am looking to upgrade my CPU, I currently have a i5-3470 with a Gainward GTX 760 which seems to be struggling a bit now. When I upgrade should I get a i5-6600K and overclock it or get the i7-6700? I though overclocking the i5 would be better for games as most games use 4 cores max, so having the high clock speed would help with the games, but I'm not totally sure. I would be willing to spend the £60 overclocking, but that is the final price. Thanks.

newer games re going to start using those threads, I would really save a little more and grab an i7. Also you may find more of a boost from a new GPU

Look around! See if you can find an i7-3770/k for cheap. DDR3 is still going to last you a while, and the 3770k will last you quite some time before you need an upgrade.

67OO Has 4 cores too

Yes, but with games using more threads, the 6700 has the advantage due to hyper-threading.

Just now, Overlandr said:

Not all threads are used all the time.

Hyper-threading is still going to give the 6700 an advantage, and in certain games like GTA V or Rise of the Tomb Raider, you will get better performance.

Bear in mind, I am talking from an objective perspective and not saying it's worth the money.

You'll get a way bigger boost from upgrading your gpu. And overclocking does very little in terms of increasing performance in games, where as we are seeing games getting better performance from the extra threads an i7. Keep in mind however, your best upgrade for gaming performance would be a new graphics card

My rig:
CPU: i5 4690k 24/7 @4.4ghz (1.165v) Max 4.7ghz (1.325v) COOLER: NZXT Kraken X61 MOBO: Asus Z97-A   RAM: 16GB Crucial Ballistix Tactical   GPU: EVGA GTX 970 SSC   PSU: EVGA GS 650W   CASE: NZXT Phantom 530 HDD: WD Caviar Blue 1TB + WD Black 2TB
