GTX 970M not being used in some games

JoeTheDragon

I noticed that my Alienware 15 R2 that contains a 970M and 16 GB of ram is not using it's graphics card in games like Star Citizen ( Runs on the Crysis Engine ). For some reason if I plug my laptop into a monitor it will start using the graphics card except maybe for the Steam VR Test where the test is saying my graphics card is "Intel Graphics 530". Is there a better way to force the graphics card to work in games that it's not working in?

The VR test shows the Intel one, but it uses the Nvidia GPU.  You can check MSI AB for GPU usage for confirmation.

I just found out how to disable Intel(R) HD Graphics 530 through the device manager. That should work.

Results didn't change but I got the graphics card to work without a monitor.

I had the same issue on my MSI GS60 (970M 6GB). If you force the application to run using the discrete card, it will post the correct results, but say it was run by the integrated igpu. I hope that doesn't mess up valve's data too much...

Disabling the Intel Graphics in the device manager caused some major issues. Fortunately, you can choose what programs you want the graphics card to be used on in the Nvidia Control Panel.
