What does a RAM reset do?

Go to solution Solved by AgentEddie99,

Well thanks for the help. All have a great day

Hi LTT fans,

I have a few time at work done a RAM reset on a Windows OS computer. When I mean a RAM reset is, taking the RAM out and starting the PC. Then after shutting down the PC after a few minutes. I put the RAM back into the PC, then start the computer. I have not asked my self until now. What that actually does to the computer.

BIOS has a built-in reset mechanism. After a number (usually three) of failed boots (which you cause by removing the RAM) it'll revert to factory defaults as a safety measure. You can also do this by hard-resetting the CMOS with the jumpers and batteries.

Well just shortly after I post that my boss come back from a job and I asked him what it does. He said that it just makes sure that the memory is completely.

This person should not be a boss.

RAM looses its contents within a small number of milliseconds, without power it wont even last 1/10th of a second and will be completely wiped. All reseating it will do is fix a contact issue, but I don't think I have ever seen a seating issue with RAM, the crimps on the side of the slots ensure all RAM is always well connected.
