Yesterday I went out and impulse-bought the Logitech G400s, as I'm a big fan of logitech quality it was an easy buy for me. So here we go:

The mouse feels cheap, especially the scrollwheel, it's kinda soft, and it feels flimsy, now I'm not saying it is, it just feels so. I'm constantly afraid it's gonna break and stay in the mouse the next time I press it because it's mushy.

All in all, not worth the money in my book, since you're basically paying for gaming-grade optics only. The rest just feels... ordinary, kinda like those old genius mice, tha black PS/2 ones that cost 5$. Maybe it's just me but there's no sense of ocasion when I'm using it, as compared to the old g15, it still feels sturdy and more importantly, special, even after all these years.

Now that we got that aside, let's concentrate on the good things for a bit.

The G400s has superb upper surface materials, I'll give it that, the balance is great, and the shape fits my hand great, almost perfectly. The 1 and 2 clicks feel really good, or for now but I'll wait a couple of months before I give a verdict on their performance. The cord leaves a thing or two to be desired, and the rubber "feet" are already starting to move around, and show signs use, 24 hours in.

I've been using a Prestigio PMSG1Y mouse for the last couple of years, and although I can't say it's better than the G400s, at 30$ it was considerably cheaper, and it had ceramic feet, 6 adjustable weights, and LED to show DPI level. Something the G400s does not have. Oh, and the scrolwheel on the cheap prestigio does not feel flimsy at all, even after years of my abuse, and it's twitchable. So I always had that "It's great for the money" kind of feel with the Prestigio, which I just don't with the G400s. And don't even get me started on the lightning effects the Prestigio has, but that's totaly subjective so it's not a matter of this review. And I'm not even gonna compare the G400s to the R.A.T. 3 and 5 because the G400s in shoulders and knees above that ergonomically, and sensor-wise.

The logitech software is superb, best as always, and I've been using it since it came out accually.

To be blunt this mouse is the best performing mouse for FPS I've ever tried hands down, I just wish it had a more special, more expensive feel. Now that I write this I ask myself if there is a G15 applet which would display what DPI level I'm currently using on the LCD, so I can switch between my normal, sniper, and vehicle modes.

To get down to brass tax:

What I like:

-sensor is superb, could take some time getting used to;

-shape is classic, and I personally like it;

-upper material feels and looks great;

-left and right clicks feel and sound great;

What I dislike:

-the cord feels cheap, it's thin, and unbraided, no "golden" USB;

-the rubber feet feel sub-par, and cheap for this kind of mouse;

-middle mouse click feels mushy and fragile, although it isn't but it still leaves a bad taste in mouth, not twitchable either.

Bottom line: as with every peripheral, it's subjective and you need to find something that fits your style best, this fits mine so I bought it. If I thought there was something better for the job I'd have gotten it.

A gold-plated USB connector yields no perceivable advantage, other than no corrosion. It's brass tacks, not tax.

Other than that, nicely done.

I know it makes no difference performance-wise, and I can guarantee that. But still, even the cheap-o's today have it, why not a premium product such as this?

Good well written review, good job!

Nice review, I've got the G400 (essentially the same) and agree with everything you've said.

I definitely feel that none of the cons are problematic enough to deter anyone if they are considering it. Despite being a palm-grip mouse I find you can really use it with any grip type. I use this strange fingertip grip with my palm well off the mouses body but palm and claw grips feel comfortable as well.

Great mouse, especially for the price.

I went from the Logitech MX518 to the G400s (same body), and have no complaints. It's higher quality than my MX518, which is really all I could ask for. I also won the mouse as a prize, so I couldn't have asked for a better prize.

I do want to try a different mouse one of these days, but receiving a free mouse makes that kind of hard! My only wish with the MX518 was that they'd add a third thumb button, kind of a utility button. Having them on top of the mouse is kind of lame. I'd want it to be a similar size to the back and forward buttons though, not tiny and right below them (as per other gaming mice).

  • 2 weeks later...

I got the g500 and i have none of these problems

What problems? The mouse works flawless, it's just that I don't like the thin cord and the funky middle click (which of I got used to by now). Had one g500, this one is far better for fps. Had the G9, better than the g500 overall as well. One of these days I'll upload a pic of all of my current Logitech peripherals.

the cord is nice and braided, and i have no issues with my middle click. it is the best mouse i ever had, but the only else i had was a 3 buck 1600dpi mouse i remember.

I own this mouse, and does the Logitech gaming software exist for it? Whenever I try to download it on their website, clicking the download button does nothing...

the G400 is a cheap mouse so its hardly surprising that it does cut corners on some aspects of quality. but the reality is it doesnt scrimp on the sensor and LMR microswitchs which means very good response and control...

the real shame is they dont use the sensor in some of there more quality orientated mice.

for me its the best £20 mouse you can find.

the negatives shouldn't put you off because you wont find a better mouse if you added another £10 to the budget. certainly nothing with a laser will come close at £30 thats for sure.
