Hello fellow Linus (or Taran, or Dennis, or... you know what I mean) fans!

I'm building a gaming PC soon (current parts list: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/kspvHx) and I'm still troubled over which brand of 970 to use. As you can see, I've chosen a Gigabyte GTX 970 Windforce 3x because... well, it was essentially talked about the most!

However, I've found somebody selling an EVGA GTX 970 Hybrid (watercooled!) for the same price, and I was wondering which one would be better. EVGA sounds cooler (lol) because I could get a higher overclock... but... I'm not super sure.

Any help is much appreciated.

THANKS!

May RNGsus be with you!

imo i would just get an R9 390. It performs a little bit better than the 970, and it has 8gb of vram.

If you want the hybrid go for it, but most 970's have sufficient enough cooling that you're not going to limited thermally with overclocking.. so don't let that be your deciding factor.  Really just pick the one you like the look of the most or the one that fits your budget.  When you start overclocking the little differences between most of them go away immediately.

What about nVidia's GeForce experience stuff? AFAIK there aren't too many free video recording software that work as well as nVidia's, and I might get a Shield later.

8GB of VRAM, is that really needed? GTX Titans when gaming only use like 6 at most, and I'm not a super-high-ultra kind of guy.

Thanks for all the responses!

If you are going to use nvidia features than just get the 970. Its not a bad card at all.

Zotac usually has some of the highest factory overclocks while being reasonably quiet. MSI and some others are doing a good job too. That´s basically the wrap-up of the research I did for myself. And Zotac offers 5 Years of warranty (at least in Germany).

You tell me! Who is your daddy and what does he do?

I personally am looking into getting the Asus STRIX edition simply because I like the idea of the "0dB Fan Technology." I'm not too big of a fan (lol) of loud fans so having the option to have no fans spinning while doing things like watching videos or even image editing sounds great to me. Not sure if the other cards have that option though. Also, the Asus version is $329.99 after rebate on Newegg so it's only $6 more than the Gigabyte one you have picked out.

If you're looking at a shield then the 390 is out. You'll need to be in the nvidia eco system.

Anyway, the windforce 970 is not what is the most talked about. Its the G1. I'm guessing you've mistaken the 2 since they have the exact same cooler. I vote evga(FTW+ model) and Msi Gaming 4G. The G1 is a good card as well but Gigabyte as of late hasn't been good in their customer support.

I refrained from going into this because I do not wish to start a team red vs green war, but it's a big reason for me to recommend the GTX 970 over the R9 390. AMD's equivalent might be slightly faster, but you don't need 8GB of VRAM (at least I don't) and with Nvidia you get stuff like ShadowPlay and PhysX and such if you're into gaming. For me it's Nvidia only anyways due to the programs I use running better and more stable on Nvidia...don't know, it might have changed recently, but up until now Nvidia always had the edge in quality and such over AMD in my opinion.

I second that, EVGA's GTX 970 with the ACX 2.0 coolers are 0db fans at idle too!

What makes the G1 different compared to the Windforce other than, I dunno, the factory clock settings? Does the G1 come with cocaine?

Anyways, I vote for the EVGA 970s.

Backplate. LEDs and overclocking oh and a damn big library of custom BIOS.

Welp, holy shit. Now, if only it came with cocaine.

And some decent customer support. Then maybe it'll be the perfect card.
