Hello, I was very interested in making a NAS with freeNAS, but i never saw anything online that said i can run other stuff, like a Teamspeak server, or host a website? Anyone know the answer or what plugin would allow me to do that? Thanks!

If you want versatility just go with Ubuntu server

^ but the only reason most people get freenas is because of ZFS.

Im not too familiar with Linux at all. I am told tho ubuntu doesnt have a gui? Also how hard would you think it would be to learn?

Ubuntu is just a skin for Linux. It does have a GUI. One of the nicest ones. However I do not know about Ubuntu Server, however it should be very similar.

raaid is dealt with on your mmotherboard or on a pci card. If you're using the pc via command line, ssh, or as the name suggest, a server, you don't need a gui. The gui actually takes up alot of space and power.

Just so you don;t go uninformed. And i was mispoken, the kernal starts at linux, debian is the first codecs layer.

Okay so would you recommend ubuntu with a GUI for someone not too familiar with command lines?

well an nas is remotely used so you'd do well to learn some basic command lines. But, yes ubuntu with a gui might help ease you into it. Mint is friendlier to windows users but has less support as it's a trimmed up and reduced child of ubuntu.

I'll tell you now though, on Linux command lines your password won't show up when you type it so just have faith that the input was entered lol

The ubuntu community is huge! you can find help everywhere, so dive in and learn

Just to clarify for the OP....

Yes Ubuntu does have available GUI's but theyre Desktop Environments, not a Web GUI like FreeNAS.

You would have to read up and learn how to install and create arrays via CLI if you wanted to setup a ZFS array - ZFS is not native on linux.

You would also have to setup CIFS/SAMBA share, Plex transcoding, NetBIOS, etc...all manually as again, its not all done through a nice GUI like FreeNAS.

Theres quite a bit of work to take into consideration to do what FreeNAS does, on a bare linux distro...

If ZFS was the only reason people wanted FreeNAS, they would get FreeBSD - FreeNAS is loved because it allows you to fully manage storage and network filesharing, from a seemingly simple interface.

True, most the work you would have is the initial install, setting up ssh, setting up samba share and you can use webadmin for a Web gui. And you could use vcn or rdp from a windows pc to access the gui. But if freenas supports the LAMP stack or whatever you use for Web hosting then you could just stick with it.

I have to disagree with that. I have tried both, and found that FreeNAS is easier to use than Ubuntu Server. The web interface of FreeNAS is definitely more intuitive for a new user than a linux command line. However, FreeNAS web interface is vastly inferior to NAS4Free - the sidebar in FreeNAS has duplicate labels to the menubar at the top, but each link to different locations. NAS4Free doesn't have a sidebar, making it much easier to find your way around it. However, the FreeNAS interface is more functional, requiring fewer drops down to the command line.

I ended up using NAS4Free because I needed a more lightweight OS than FreeNAS as I was running it on 10-year-old hardware, but I found implementing ZFS on Ubuntu Server more work than I had time for, and NAS4Free worked fine.
