If you have the money, something like a MacBook is the perfect choice :) I mean, the only 2 uses i see for that system is a) Someone who does light web-browsing (facebook, youtube...) and b) writters. It is light, portable, and has a long batery life. Also the Mac writting programs are years ahead of their PC counterparts, UI-wise. Think of it as a work tool, and quality is assured here.

If you just want a cheap computer to do the job, then look into something like a Dell Inspiron 3000 series (cheap ones) or some Toshiba Satellite CL (ultra cheap one).

But dont expect them to do anything more than typing in a word document or such.

Planning on trying StarCitizen (Highly recommended)? STAR-NR5P-CJFR is my referal link

A ThinkPad form the X or T series as those have the records for longest battery beating a Macbook by 2-3 hours as well as costing about half as much. + They are FAR more durable than any consumer laptop or Mac

Sorry man but a 12' Mac isn't a good call here when this costs less and delivers more - http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/thinkpad/t-series/t450s/?cid=us:display:wdd9pk

If the idea is for primarily writing, and if you are able to review and select with your family member in tow, I would think the following are important points to consider:

o  weight -- lighter the better to carry around in different writing environments

o  comfort of keypad -- for obvious reasons.  Something by which a natural neutral hands arrangement for typing won't interfere with a trackpad accidentally going off, or with a keyboard too close to the front edge to make a wrist wrest a necessity.  They ought to take a good 10-15m typing on examples to see their comfort levels.

o  comfort of laptop -- want to be able to type with the laptop on their lap and not heat up

o  screen quality -- I'd say a matte screen if possible; and enough luminosity or visible contrasts to work in sunshine and outdoor environments

@OldFart I'd also say build quality as you don't want your novel going to shit cause the HDD cage wasn't up to snuff
