What lense should I use for sports?

I mostly shoot my siblings sports (gymnastics, soccer, and baseball) and I think my current lens is holding me back from getting the best photos possible. I have a Nikon D5300 and my main sports lens is a Nikon SF-S NIKKOR 55-300mm 1:4.5-5.6. From what I've read (new to photography) I need a low aperture and fast shutter speed (could be wrong). I'm just looking right now but hope to buy in the next few months. $2000 would probably be my max budget.

    Thanks for any info.

Try this lens: Sigma 70-200 f/2.8

And if you need to get a longer focal length, buy a 1.4x teleconverter.

Nikon, Sigma and Tamron have 70-200mm f2.8 models. Nikon is the most expensive one. Just make sure to get one with optical stabilization.

The most ideal lens ever, the Sigma 200-500 f/2.8

I purchased this lens with the intent to look back in space-time and see the Big Bang unfold first hand. I must say it was a little difficult to find the correct line of visibility within the Hubble Deep Field, but after a few precision adjustments, I was finally looking at the origins of our universe. Seriously Awesome!

I also want to add that if you want more reach than a 70-200 and are not too concerned about low light performance, there is the sigma 150-600mm contemporary and the sigma 150-600 sport. Both great lenses from what i have seen.
