Because he will mostly use his PC for gaming, so no need for an i7, especially on a budget like this.

Except DX12 will prefer more cores and the OP wants the build to last 4 - 5 years. In addition the OP stated he has 800 - 900 USD for THE REMAINING PARTS, which gets a build like this:

Wow yeah, completely missed that TI, thought that was way out of my budget, but i might be able to squeeze that in after all.

this is a tricky quesiton, but how long would you reckon a single 970 would last? while playing on best settings? as i'm thinking that maybe if the 970 would be enough for now, i could SLI/crossfire 2 of them in the future?

Firestrike, why would you recommend the H110i GTX instead?

I personnally would go for an H110i GTX, absolutely, because it's the same price and it's the most powerful AIO watercooler form Corsair, bigger, quieter because it's bigger so it doesn't need to spin as fast as the H100i GTX, and it cools way better.

|| CPU - i7 4790K @4.6GHz || GPU - MSI GTX 980 Gaming 4G || Motherboard - Asus Z97-A || RAM - 16GB Kingston HyperX Fury @1866MHz |Case Be quiet! Silent Base 800 ||

|| CPU Cooler - Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO || Storage - Samsung 850 Pro 256GB & Seagate Barracuda 2TB (+ WD Caviar Green 2TB) ||

|| Mouse - Logitech G502 Proteus Core || Keyboard - Corsair K70 (MX Red) ||

get the 980ti, never set out with SLI in  system unless its 2x tops tier.

2x 970 > 980ti generally. however, they use more power and require SLI support in the game and generally the min fps is less than a 980ti.
