Hey fellow LTT hermits!

Im about to help my friend upgrade his relatively old desktop with a ivy bridge i5 and a 9800gts

However he is on windows vista still

Would he experience a big performance hit?

Im thinking of helping him buy a 380x

TL;DR = 380x and windows vista bueno?

It will work but you won't get DX11 iirc.

I think it's not worth keeping vista. You can pick up a win7 or win8 (maybe win10) copy for cheap nowadays.

HP Pavilion p007tx (i5 4210u, gt840m, 8GB DDR3 memory and a 1 TB HDD that makes cool sounds when booting up)

Since my laptop can't run modern games too well I use a PS4

Pick up a 380x and buy Windows 7 for 20$ off Reddit then upgrade to Windows 10 for free.

Not true, just the games that require DX11+ won't work. Some games use OpenGL as their API of choice.

Also, as a CompTIA certified tech, I do not recommend getting your OS from Reddit.

How long have you had the license for? I saw on some forums that these licensees gets expired after a few years

I've had it for almost 6 months now. Make sure the version of W7 you're getting is a retail key and you'll never have that issue.

DX10 was a full blown release feature of Vista.

DX11 came in at around the early stages of the Windows 7 release.

Yes, but from what I understand you still get full DX11 support in Vista SP2.

I personally don't think it makes much sense to use Windows Vista in a modern PC. Mainstream support for Vista ended in April 2012, and extended support ends completely in April 2017, at which point it will be the Wild West for viruses. Besides, depending on what type of license your friend has, he may have trouble getting his copy of Vista to activate on a new motherboard.
