Older amd cpu

My brother is using a fx4100 which is overclocked sligtly.

 

I have A friend that have a phenom 2 x6 1090t for sale atm.

 

Will it be an upgrade for my brother?

it would be a good upgrade. Aslong as your friend hasnt tortured it.

id get the phenom since it is almost on par with the fx8350

The FX-4100 is a 1st gen Bulldozer which means its worse than any Phenom II also two more cores will help!

I have a Phenom II quad with a GTX 580... they are still great CPU's the only time it will hold you back a bit is when you get a game like CSGO and a company that brings out updates that break the damn game.

I get a compatible motherboard with te 1090t because my brother have an old 760g-e51 motherboard for his fx-4100

The 1090t is equivalent to a 2600k iirc.

careful with that board. According to the list of "FX" approved motherboards, that board is NOT reccomended for 125w CPUs... Be VERY careful when slipping a 125w Phenom II into it. It may not hold out very long.

actually, Phenom II does have higher IPC, but they have notable lower clock speed and lack quite a few instruction sets. This is why in modern games, a FX 6 is equal OR better. Reason is simple. Single core performance = clock speed (#clocks per second) + IPC (#instructions per clock), changing either value up or down can cause you to end up with equal result.

 

What Phenom II got on FX is scaling. It scales better (due to lack of FXs resources). However, its IMC is showing its age, it is worse then FX and FX's IMC is already quite atrocious....

Phenom II is also hurt by its lack of proper Turbo. It can only, and i mean ONLY turbo HALF of its cores, whilst FX can turbo ALL ITS CORES at once. This is why, despite having higher IPC, even at nearly equal clock speeds, FX 6300, despite having only 5.09x scaling, meaning its multi core performance is around 5.09 times that of its single core performance (you want equity or higher then # of cores)..... Which is rather shameful. ANd yes, i know its not 5.09x in Anandtechs benchmarks. That is the scaling I get in Cinebench R15. And ive ran that test on frequencies ranging from 3.5GHz no turbo to 4.62GHz OC... it scales AT MOST 5.09x its single core performance. It gets up to 6.47 with all 8 cores...

In comparison, a 4790k (4 cores + HT) scores 4.82 at stock... meaning it scales higher then its number of cores. Which is what you ideally want.

As said before, the cpu i have now is the fx4100 sitting on the 760g-e51. The phenom 1090t comes with a 970 chipset instead, an asus one if im correct :-)

Which Asus board?

some of them are NOT very good. Or rather, the power delivery circuits on the motherboard to the CPU is very weak.... Especially on some of the boards, unfortunatly.

the  760g-e51 can handle the 1090T it says so in the specs honestly i would spend as little as possible for such an old CPU.
