I don't know what CPU to buy.

ovunc352

Hi. i used to be a console peasant and I'm thinking to build a new pc. I have 4500 TRY budget (1500 US dollars) but don't know what is the best. With my limited knowledge i was planning to buy i7 4790k cpu  msi z79 gaming5 mobo Gtx 970 gpu and 8 gigs of ram but do you think it is a good combo? and what is a Skylake cpu?

a Skylake CPU is a CPU of the 6th Generation, with the Core i3/i5/i7 having a 6xxx number. I wouldn't invest in a Haswell system if the budget allows skylake. if you only are planning to game; take a core i5. the number within the i5 series depends on whether you want to overclock or not.

in short:

Gaming only?

yes: core i5

no, also video editing, streaming: core i7

overclocking?

yes: i5-6600K or i7-6700K

no: i5-6500 (better price/performance in my country, don't know prices in your country), or i7-6700 (non -K)

with a -K CPU take a Z170 motherboard to enable overclocking, otherwise go for a B150/H170 depending on your other needs. 8 gigs of ram is okay, but 16 is not a bad idea. take DDR4 with a skylake CPU.

As far as I've heard, the major difference between some i7s and i5s is the stock clock speed. I believe i5 is more suitable for gaming (even though I have an i7 myself, which might have been a mistake considering $$ per FPS)

One of the major differences is that a i7 has Hyperthreading (2 threads per physical core), which costs more, but since games are not optimized for multicore CPUs it doesn't make sense to buy a i7 for 100$ more or something, just for a little performance upgrade, cause you could invest the money in the GPU.

the difference between i7s and i5s is Hyperthreading, a kind of multithreading. Fact is that lots of games don't benefit from this, and thus the i5 gives comparable performance. only with really high-end cards and certain games it makes a difference. Video-editing and streaming do however profit from those extra threads

4790k beats 6700k in terms of gaming.

i7 offers better clock speeds as well as a larger cache and hyperthreading capabilities compared to it's i5 counterpart for desktop CPU's

yeah i may edit videos so I'm buying a 6700K then. Which mobo to go with? and why not 4790k?

I'd like to see evidence of that.

It would be a wiser decision to get X99 and a 5820k then.

Also, I'm sure there are games where the 6700k wins and it can also depend on how high the quality of the chip you receive is.

between 4790k and 5820k there is 100 dollar difference in my country so its out of my budget. my only question is a 6700k is worth the extra

If you can't afford the 5820k then the 6700k is also out of the question for you because they are the same price.

In Turkey it isn't. we only have one proper retailer and it prices the products what ever they want. so a 6700k is 384.95 dollars and a 5820k is 433.9    (4790k is 374.89 )

I don't think that they disagree, they just have different results because they are benching different games.  The techpowerup results are across 12 different games.  The big kicker in those results is that they were released a week after the 6700k. With those results being for games made before the 6700k's release, your response brings up a valid point that newer games will utilize the 6700k better.

Damn, that sucks.

I knew prices varied between countries, but you would think that they would keep their value the same in relation to other products.  I guess people in Turkey are more interested in rendering/multitasking than gaming.

That article I posted includes results showing both processors at the same clock speed and the 4790k outperforming the 6700k by a total sum of more than 100fps across 12 games.

The problem is, like I mentioned above, those results were based on 12 games made prior to the 6700k's release.  Thus those games are at best tailored for the 4790k and Haswell.  Newer games that have been released after the 6700k should take advantage of the 6700k and the improvements implemented by the Skylake chipset. Thus making recent and future games perform better on Skylake.

If you are not an enthusiastic Pro-Overclocker, who wants to beat 4,8 Ghz records, or something, and are happy with 4,4-4,6~ (which is the best sweetspot for skylake in terms of clock speed / Voltage ratio), i personally would go for those 3, who all have a very good featureset and quality for their price:

- AsRock Z170 Extreme 4

- Asus Z170 Pro Gaming

- MSI Z170A Sli Plus

All 3 have everything you want.

M.2 in full speed, USB Type C, no old PCI Slots (Only PCIe), at least 10 CPU-Phases for Overclocking, which are also enough Cooled.

The AsRock also comes with the most USB3.0 ports, and also a Diagnostic LED.

You won't have any real benefit with more expensive Motherboards.
