Cant open file explorer

Go to solution Solved by LogicalDrm,

Any chance you are using custom or over 150% dpi setting?

I just put a fresh copy of win 10 of my computer, and it was working until the other day when i had a gamee crash on me. After that, i cant open file explorer or anything related to that( pics, videos, documents....). I cant figure how the two could be connected, but it was litterally working right before the crash and then stopped right after. I ran a system file check through the command prompt and that came up with no problems. Anyone got any ideas why this would happening?

Unlikely to be the issue considering you mentioned using cmd but is explorer.exe running in the task manager? If so try killing it and then restarting it through the task manager... but that would have been the same as rebooting your system so I doubt it'll fix it.

Boot into Windows Safe Mode + CMD.

Now on startup, go into Task Manager and click new task.

In the dialogue, type in explorer.exe and start then start the process.

If it process fails to start, you will probably need to get any important data off the drive (Using another computer + USB to SATA interface), and clean install.

Hmm, wierd this... it could be because you were using file explorer right before the crash. I do know that windows restores your open explorer windows after reboot, so might be something to do with that, it already thinks it's running, and could actually be running but you can't see it.

Have you tried booting into safe boot? or any other options you might be able to try in the system config?

OK,  so I can get it open in safe mode,:-) however, when I do that outside of safe mode it does the same thing(the black screen for a split second and acts like it wasn't told to open) even with admin privileges

So File Explorer works, you can navigate anywhere, but not your personal folders (Documents/Pictures/Downloads, etc.). If that is the case, right-click on one of them, select Properties, go to Location tab, and make sure that the path is correct.

Holy crap, you are right. I just changed the dpi and it opened right away. What?

I'm not sure why it happens. But it did happen to me too, thats why I know about it. I was using 175% dpi for few weeks until after one boot same problem.

On side note. It's really sad when MS says they are making accessible products. Still Win10 has lame and light general color scheme. And now this issue when you try to get text bit more readable. 175% would be enough for my eyes.

Strange, because at work I have a 4K monitor. So my DPI is set to 150%. No issue

And it has been a long time since I have Win10 (About since it was released.)

150% is fine. Thats what I use on my 1080p laptop now. Anything over that is problem. Like I had it set to 175% which is just perfect for my vision.

E: And I know its not location/path issue either. My Computer didn't open, none of my desktop folder didn't open. I had to open PDF file from reader app when I first encountered this issue.
