It's not the best PSU but he shouldn't return it. If he already has it it's a solid enough PSU and the wattage is perfectly sufficient, even for a 390.

@Geekvoid

It is a good enough PSU, but he could he gotten a great one for that price.

He could've, I completely agree, but if he already has it there's no point in returning it as you suggest as the RM series are already decently good and the wattage is sufficient. Returning it would involve a fair amount of effort for not much benefit.

What is the difference in price where you live?

You overclock a gpu wtih msi afterburner, or a simular program.

There are a lot of tutorials for it on YouTube.

My PC would cost a $100-$200 more than the US.

For example the GPU is about $40 more expensive.

IMO it is worth it.

If it is an unopened box and he bought it a week ago, the store he bought would probably allow him to return it, they may only give him back 90% of the purchase cost, but that is 90% saved compared with buying a better PSU 3 years down the track and you have lost the entire purchase cost.

I am annoyed that I bought a sub par PSU. A RM is not a sub par PSU, but then again it doesn't blow you away with high quality, something that you want since a very good PSU is still very good in 5-10 years time.

I have lost $80AUD on a crappy PSU (It still works but I am not going to use it ever again), the new PSU I am going to buy will last me 10+ years, and it has now cost me $80 more than if I had of bought it in the 1st place.

I think you're underestimating PSUs in general. I built a PC about 18 months ago for my father, with an i5 4590 and a GTX 960. In my infinite wisdom, I put a 350W PSU that isn't good quality at all in with those components (I know, what was I thinking...). That thing, despite being pretty low quality and the wattage not being great, has lasted those 18 months fine and is still going strong.

PSUs are an awful lot more durable and capable than you seem to be giving them credit for, even the lower quality ones. The RM550 is guaranteed for five years, and could even surpass that.

1. I would not recommend using a gaming GPU with a 350W PSU in general.

I also never said it won't be fine. Just if you spend a little bit more, you can get a lot more for your money.

I have seen generic branded PSUs that are over 15 years old and are still going fine, it doesn't mean all of that model is fucking awesome or that it should have been used for 15 years. The better the PSU, the longer its life and the longer all your parts live.

Lets do some PSU picking.

This $69AUD PSU (EVGA 500W) has a 3 year warranty (https://www.pccasegear.com/products/33298/)

EVGA expects it to live over 3 years.

This $129AUD PSU (EVGA 750B2) has a 5 year warranty (https://www.pccasegear.com/products/28100/)

EVGA expects it to live over 5 years.

This $169AUD PSU (EVGA 750G2) has a 10 year warranty (https://www.pccasegear.com/products/27992/)

EVGA expects it to live over 10 years

If EVGA expected that most of the 500B's would live over 5 years, why wouldn't they have a 5 year warranty? It would make the product look a lot better, even though it means not much. Because they are not so sure if that PSU will last that long.

Hello, I want to know if the GPU I chose, R9 390, will work with my set up and 550w power supply.

I already bought the power supply. I also want to know, if the r9 390 isn't power efficient enough, should I go with the gtx 970.

Parts picked: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/xZ47f7

Thanks for your help!!

Yes, a 550W RM has plenty of wattage and performs good enough to power a 390. Cheers.

My account is almost entirely dormant. Hope you all are having a grand time. Many years of fun were had here.
