Hello, I want to know if the GPU I chose, R9 390, will work with my set up and 550w power supply.

I already bought the power supply. I also want to know, if the r9 390 isn't power efficient enough, should I go with the gtx 970.

Parts picked: http://pcpartpicker.com/p/xZ47f7

Thanks for your help!!

No, it won't.

Power efficiency is rated in the 80+ tiers (bronze, silver, gold, platinum, titanium). You're just wasting money by getting a 1000W for a single R9 390.

OP it'll depend on the PSU you got.

I don't have much info on Corsair RMs (though I think their decent ones) but I got a Seasonic 520W  and I don't have any issues.

You didn't pay attention in the video, a 1000W gold power supply will do just as good as a 550W gold power supply. It's the efficiency rating that matters, anyhow paying all that money to just save a couple of watts isn't worth it, especially with the 970!

1000 watts seems way too over the top. Something linus would use in a triple gtx 980:D

Still 1000W is too much for SLI.

Something like 850W, maybe even 750W would be enough

Did you? You clearly did not listen to what Luke said about efficiency ratings.

The 1500W was a Titanium rated efficiency PSU and it won, like it should have.

It is better due to the 80+ rating, but not necessarily. Generally speaking, having a high wattage psu that's running a low wattage system will cause the psu to be less efficient, drawing more power from your wall and in turn, making your power bill more expensive. You will want your system to use at least 20% of your psu wattage for it to be efficient. You will be wasting your money buying a 1000w psu but not fully using it so buying one will be counter-productive.

A SLI 970 doesn't even take more than 600W of load, and SLI is not recommended he will be better of with a single card upgrade (e.g 980ti) because of stuttering issues:

Edit: His board doesn't support SLI as well.

750W is enough for 2 GTX 970s. 850W would be enough for Crossfired 390s and SLI'd 980Tis.

I see what you mean, but I am already a little over my budget and I don't think I can afford a new gpu.

I would recommend buying a geforce gtx 970.

It is about as good as the r9 390, doesnt use as much power, doesnt produce as much heat, and probarly because of that is a better overclocker (if you are into that) and has a better lifespan.

A 750w psu will be more than enough for SLI. The only time where you will need a 1000w+ psu is when you are building a overkill system or something.

Yeah I was thinking the same, but how would you overclock a GPU?

And the reason I was leaning towards an r9 390 is due to the price to performance ratio.

Just because it achieves higher temperatures doesn't mean have a worse life span, each card has different temperature limits (and overclocking the 970 will cut its life span by the way), and it perfroms better in GPU bound situations.

What is the difference in price where you live?

You overclock a gpu wtih msi afterburner, or a simular program.

There are a lot of tutorials for it on YouTube.

Is it possible that you could return it? There is a lot better options out there for a lot less.

It's not the best PSU but he shouldn't return it. If he already has it it's a solid enough PSU and the wattage is perfectly sufficient, even for a 390.

Download MSI Afterburner, a software that will allow you to overclock your gpu.
