Is Crossfire worth it?

Cowy

I was thinking about buying another AMD 7870 and running it in crossfire, but is it really worth it? Will i see a decent performance boost and will it increase the longevity of my PC? Any thoughts are appreciated!

Cheers  :D

I'd say, sell your current card and get a 7970 or wait for the 200 series.

if you were to ignore how bad Crossfire is overally, you still would need to ask yourself: do you really want to run 2x 7870 instead of buying a new GPU? Let's say you have a good power supply (600-700w bronze +)... do you have a PC that can actually run crossfire? And can it run crossfire well (what's your CPU)?

So many questions :)

I'd get a new GPU.

So... If Jesus had the gold, would he buy himself out instead of waiting 3 days for the respawn?

A fine system. Go ahead and get a second one if you feel like having dual GPU system that will not match a single GTX 780 (and likely, a single 9970 or whateva is the name of it). I would wait for new GPUs.

If you really want an amd card then I think it's best to get it now because the prices are really good (before the next gen launches). A better single gpu config is the way to go.

Amd did bring out drivers to fix the microstuttering for 2 way crossfire but I don't think it's perfect yet.

Why would you sell and then go 2 low/mid end cards?

Because 2 mid range>high end x1

And because i am talking shit why?

actually since those are Tahiti cores I would pick up another XT card and OC the hell out of them. Be sure you buy a Tahiti 7870 and not a Pitcairn.

and I really doubt you will, but just in case, don't do this

Well hopefully the R200 series have hardware fix for frame pacing just like the Nvidia ones.

Yeah but 2 cards can often run into issues in certain games that aren't optimized for it etc. It's a much simpler process running 1 card.

Also he already has one 7870, if he wanted to do dual cards he may aswell get a second and save a truckload. Hell, for the money of 2 760's he could get a 3rd 7870 if he wanted.

Well said!  :)

Cheers  :D

Hmm.... Crossfire frame pacing problems, then you go on to say get a 2nd 7870, i am being pedantic on the last part, but the first part counts :P

Grab a 770/780 if you want a single GPU upgrade.

I meant that as in if he were to get a dual GPU setup at all then a 7870 xfire setup would be better in his case as he would save a ton and not lose out a great deal of performance in the process :)

Saving money is always a bonus, so yeah, i will probably go for a xfire setup! Thanks for all the input everyone! :)
