If Nvidia continues to follow the same pattern as Kepler vs Maxwell then I would expect this:

980TI = Pascal x80
980 = Pascal x70
970 = Pascal x60

June 2017:
Pascal x80TI > Pascal x80 (980TI)

I would opt for the 980TI or wait for Pascal x70.

What GPU are you running right now?

There's about a 20% performance gap between the 980 and 980Ti, so it's up to you if $200 more is worth that extra performance.

You can't make those assumption based on past generations. This is a new architecture on a new node (16nm vs 28nm for the past 2-3 generations) and will be using full HBM. So you can't make the same assumptions/predictions.

Ok, in that case, if you're gaming at 1080p; I'd keep what you have and hold out for Pascal/Polaris later this year. The 970 still performs really well at 1080.

Yes, this is very generalized. I wouldn't expect a major jump in performance though. Even if the new platform is capable at much better performance, I would expect Nvidia to hold back on the first wave and then unlock more of the performance potential halfway through with their TI line. It's all about marketing and selling more cards. They have no reason to make such a huge jump in performance.

I'd argue against that. If he can go for the 980Ti then he might as well.

Being the closest comparison to the 390 at this point, my 290X struggles to do 1080p60 max settings on some games. If OP can afford a 980Ti, I would suggest he get that. Although at this point I'd recommend not even buying a GPU until Nvidia's/AMD's new lineup comes out to see what they've got going.

Then yeah, I would keep what you have now and run it for at least another 6 months or so. Wait and see how fast Pascal and Polaris will be and also wait for the 4k monitor market to mature and prices to settle down a bit. 4k is still pretty pricey to get into at this point (IMO).

Witcher 2, guaranteed Witcher 3 when I get to it. GTA V. Fallout 4.

Those are just a few to name that I currently play a lot of right now. That list is only ever going to expand as well. Going back to my original post to answer your question: yes, I am playing at max settings, unless I have to turn down settings to achieve 60fps at least, which I have to do for the games stated above.

They have more insight into each other than you may think. I'm sure there will be a bump in performance, I just don't think it will be as big as a lot of people expect. The big exception to this is VR being a big driving force for both companies to push better performance.

I would beg to differ considering how well Fiji handles 4k with only 4GB vram. But yeah, as long as the memory bus is wide and fast enough, the biggest gain comes from the GPU itself. ;)

They do have a reason to make a huge jump in performance - staying ahead of Polaris. Nvidia doesn't know how fast Polaris will be and AMD doesn't know how fast Pascal will be. I would bet they're both going for the best performance they can get from their new chips... ;)

Not once crossfire comes into play. If AMD had stayed with traditional memory the Fury X would have been a contender. Imagine a Fury X 16g, I may have bought one.

If anyone asks you never saw me.

price to performance what should i get

400 i can get a 980 but for a little over 600 i could get the 980ti or should i just skip it all and wait till pascal comes out?

You can get a GTX 980 ti for $650 that has double the performance of a 980 while only being $150 more. Grab a Zotac AMP! extreme or Strix

Lol, the 980Ti does not have double the performance of a 980. It's about 20% faster.

20% fastest but raw performance, especially on that zotac, is going to be way more than 20%

No, 20% stock vs stock. Reference vs reference. The OC versions of both would be a little more of a gap, maybe 25%+/- because the OC on the Ti will yield a bit more performance. But no Ti out of the box has double the performance of any 980.
