Upgrading Pentium G3258 to ______?

Good morning everyone,

 

I'm looking to upgrade my Pentium G3258 (OC to 4.4 GHz).  My current parts are listed below.  I was thinking of upgrading to either an Intel Xeon e3 1231v3 or Intel i7 4790k.  I understand that their is a decent price difference between the two. But I am stuck on determining whether the price difference is worth it...  Any suggestions/comments will be very much appreciated.

 

Current Use

- Data mining via MS SQL Server Express (large data sets, i.e. 23 million rows)

- Visual Studio C# Programming

* Both uses scenarios are currently for exploratory use

 

Goal

- Increase the responsiveness of queries to allow for more complex queries across multiple databases.

- Increase responsiveness of Visual Studio

I'd go with the 4790k

Do you oc? Yes? Then 4790k. No? 1231v3.

I'd probably go for a 4690k or 4790k over the Xeon E3. That particular Xeon is pretty similar to the 4790k, but the gain you get from Overclocking definitely makes it worthwhile. It's pretty much a 4790.

I would personally go with the 4790K.

 

After all, if you OCed your G3258 then it's also likely you'll be OCing your 4790K.

Xeon seems like amazing price/performance. 

 

I hadn't really considered that as an option before, but it will likely be what I do in the future in Zen ends up blowing chunks. 

 

I mean, it's i7 performance at i5 prices.

Intel has made Devil's Canyon, 4690K and 4790K to run exclusively on Z97 and H97 boards, but some board makers claim to make it work on older chipsets like the Z87, with a bios update. But for some users, even with a bios update, seem to have some issues getting it to work, while others have no problems.

not once they are overclocked though. the i5 overclocked can easily keep up with a stock i7
