2560X1440 graphics card requirement

rhyseyness

Hello all!

I've just bought the U2515H from Dell.

Currently I have a GTX 660ti.

I know I have no chance of running anything at 1440p at high settings with this card.

So my question is, what should I look at upgrading my graphics card to?

Would SLI-ing the 660ti give enough power to be running at 40+ FPS on decent settings at 1440p?

Would the 2GB memory on the card limit my ability to run at 1440p in SLI?

What would be the best value single card solution to upgrade to, to meet the above requirements (40+FPS, decent settings)?

I prefer Nvidia cards but if a strong argument can be made for an AMD based solution, I'm open to suggestions.

Thanks in advance.

Rhys

660Ti runs the games at low just fine, I'd get a 980 atleast for 1440p if you are aiming for ultra.

SLI would probably give you low-med settings at 2.5k, but the VRAM isn't going to be enough even for modern 1080p titles.

As fro single card solutions, a GTX 970/R9 390 would be sufficient for your slightly-more-than-1080p gaming needs. I'd personally go with the R9 for the extra VRAM.

Primary Build: i7-4790 · 16GB Hynix DDR3-1600 · Sapphire Tri-X R9 390x · NZXT S340 · Win10 Pro · Seagate Barracuda 1TB T_T

Portable: 2015 Retina Macbook Pro 13" · i5-5257u · 512GB PCIe SSD · Intel Iris 6100 T_T

a 970 should be fine too for 60hz. What's your budget?

A 970 isn't great I had one when upgrading to that monitor and had to buy a second 970. I get real good FPS now however on most new games! Intense games however are still an issue!

If I was you mate I'd maybe stick it out a little longer play mid to low settings and wait for Pascal! Their whole aim is Graphics at resolutions higher than 1080p!

Used 290x or new 390. Definitely take a deal on a 290x if you find one.

In case the moderators do not ban me as requested, this is a notice that I have left and am not coming back.

Thanks for the speedy replies!

Glad to hear I'll be able to run at low just fine with my 600ti :)

I don't really have a budget. I'll save and buy whatever the best solution is.

Looking like a 970 is the way to go...

Would the extra money for a 980 be worth it, or is the 980ti better value?

I'm running a GTX680 2GB with a 1440p monitor, and I can run most games on decent settings  at playable framerates.

That being said:

- I'm hitting that 2GB VRAM limit more and more frequently as newer games come out, so I would look for a 4GB card instead of SLI 2GB cards (since that only gives you 2GB total to use)

- An upgrade would give me better settings and hold up for longer.

I would suggest a 4GB GTX970 or higher. A 960 would be doable too (since that's around the performance I have now but with 4GB VRAM), but that probably won't last very long as newer titles come out.

I honestly wouldn't go for the 970, a 980Ti is the best value for that resolution.

The 970 lacks the vram, 6GB is actually a minimum for 1440p in my opinion.

A 980Ti is a better value IMO, or you could wait until the next gen of cards (which should be coming this year) and get the 970 equivalent of that generation. That's probably what I'm gonna do.

So now I'm leaning towards "stick it out on low settings until Pascal."

Is the 290x decent at 1440p?

I can pick one up for about £150 (~$270).

Worth it to fill the gap for a while, or just wait for Pascal and pick up the 1070 (or whatever the hell it will be called)?

290x will do a  great job, if you think that it's worth to do so..

I knew that was the answer I'd get, lol.

780ti vs. 290x?

They're around the same price here.

Which would perform better @1440p.

I'm guessing 290x given the extra GB of memory?

The VRAM isn't the bottleneck there, it won't give you any performance boost.

If the price of those two are identical I would get the 780Ti, it performs better than the 290x.

Yea, I misread ebay, lol.

780ti is about 33% more than the 290x.

I'll have a look into getting a 290x or just see how I feel with the 660ti and wait for pascal.

Thanks for all the help everyone :)

I upgraded from Dual 660ti's to a 290 and I'd say saw a slight Performance increase!

Try and aim for an R9 Fury, it's slightly better than a 980, if you can't afford that then like others go for a 290X or 390(X).

Yeah, killer card for £150, that's about what I paid for mine. I stay above 50 FPS on The Witcher 3 on ultra (no hairworks obviously) - dial that back a little for 60hz without Freesync

I also play on 1440p, but I have Freesync monitor as well

290X is looking too compelling to continue being an nVidia fanboy.

Haha indeed, I had never owned an AMD or even ATi card before this 290x :D

I've gone from Nvidia FX 5600 to 9800GTX+ to GTX 470 and finally to 290x. (Can't remember what was in my first computer, but I think it was Voodoo FX something)
