Hey guys, so I have an Intel Core i5 4690 (non K!) and an MSI PC Mate Z97 Mobo. I heard you could overclock non k CPUs so decided to give it a shot. Opened up BIOS, turned it up from 100 to Roughly 102, then booted. It turned out great, was running at 3.7GhZ under stress. This was fine so I booted again and turned it up to 103, this time when I tried to boot, Windows froze after loading and the computer turned itself off. When I booted again (to turn clock speed down), I got a message that said "OC Genie Activated", this was fine, I thought this was just to help me out. Then the computer turned itself off. I booted again and got a blank screen, then the computer turned itself off again. I waited a minute, then booted, and it posted; I opened BIOS and turned clock back down to 100 (just for safety), now computer's running fine.

Do any of you know if I could push the clock speed up to 3.9/4.0 without damaging it? I'm quite new to this so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

BCLK ocing isn't as easy as you think (unless Skylake). I managed to get mine to stay stable at 103 BCLK but that's it. It's because the BCLK is linked to the RAM speeds and PCIe bus speeds and whatnot.

No not on Haswell, the most you can expect is around 103 which won't get you any real gains. Plus with the amount of things that are effected by baseclock it's not worth the effort because all it takes is one thing to be unstable to ruin the whole OC. If you wanted to OC you should have bought a K chip.

FYI 3.7Ghz isn't an OC, the 4690 is rated at 3.9Ghz Boost. http://ark.intel.com/products/80810/Intel-Core-i5-4690-Processor-6M-Cache-up-to-3_90-GHz

Guys, I really need your help. I tried again (like a complete idiot) and now the computer won't post. I can hear Windows though in the background, but there's nothing on the screen, can you guys help please? I'm so desperate right now. I mean it fixed itself earlier but I can't get it working now, what should I do????
