Hello guys !!

So, I'm in the process of building a new gaming PC with a budget of around $500 for just a boot ssd, motherboard, ram, gpu, and cpu. (already have the case and psu)

and I've picked out the ram, cpu, and ssd but I am still debating on the gpu I should use. I am looking at a gtx 960 but I can only fit in the model with 2 gigs of vram and I've heard the r9 380 is the better buy for around the same price bracket, so does anybody have some thoughts on this?

Also, here are the parts I have so far, excluding the gpu. (Mob, ram, ssd, cpu) -  http://pcpartpicker.com/p/z2yyvK  (ps. I used pcpartpicker because it's easier for this but I'n getting them from newegg)

Hope everybody's having a good day :)

Imma go with the 380 here.

By the way, I once saw a thread locked because the title was AMD vs. Nvidia.

This thread might suffer the same fate. LOL. :D

CPU: Intel i5-4590 | Motherboard: Asus H97M-E | GPU: Sapphire Nitro R9 390 | RAM: 2x4Gb Kingston HyperX Fury Black | SSD: Sandisk Plus 240Gb HDD: Seagate 250Gb  | PSU: Seasonic G650 80+ Gold | Case: NZXT S340

I am who I am.

The R9 380 is a great card.  You could save a bit of money and get it in the 2GB variant, but I feel like it really isn't worth it.  4GB should help you if you choose to upgrade to 1440p in the future (as the trend seems to be going), and it'll handle 1080p easy.

Change your title, it may start a flame war all by itself.:|

OT: Parts picker is the go to site for builds.xD

For your budget stick to Radeons for price but you can still pick up a GTX950 from NVidia and fit the low budget and it will perform for your needs just as well.

Also You wont need an 8core CPU for your build. Stick with a 2 or 4 core with such a budget system and you have more available for a higher GPU, such as the Intel G530 ($59) or I3-4160 ($98), you would do better for it.

Seems to me this thread belongs in new builds and planning...

Anyway, I second @App4that on the GPU, but I think you should choose a different CPU. FX series isn't worth it nowadays, even for budget builds.

Yeah guys, I'll likely go with the r9 380 as apposed to the gtx 960, and @Dash Lambda but for a budget build a good intel process is expensive compared to an FX cpu, I mean if you have any thoughts for the cpu, lets hear them man? and yes I know, I kinda accidentally misplaced this thread

As far as Intel goes in a similar price bracket I'd recommend an i5-4440, i5-4690k, or i5-6500.  Factor in the costs of the CPU cooler for overclocking the FX and it would come out similar to one of the non-overclocking Intel processors.

Hold up I can give you a better intel build. You be surprised on how weak FX cpu's are compared to intel's. Even two generation Intel CPU's can beat an AMD CPU in gaming.

Make sure you have the appropriate mounting hardware for whatever cooler you get, this is pretty important! :P

Just saying, two generations ago was Haswell, the FX CPU's did alright up against Sandy/Ivybridge didn't they?

Well I meant Sandy/Ivybridge  But these benchmarks show a big difference in power.

Oh I wasn't defending the FX, just saying that there's not much difference between Sandy/Ivybridge and the FX's.

Yeah, on enthusiast and laptops. For us mere mortals we went from Haswell to Skylake.

Still counts, ;)

@Ramamataz got it first, darn~

Either way, he probably gave you a better build than I would've. Of all the people here, I'm definitely not the best for budget builds...

Guys I've been looking and I see that the R9 380 is better then the gtx 960 performance wise for gaming and what not but I mean what about AMD's bad drivers for games and such recently?

The R9 does outperform the 960 but that depends on the job its performing

As for drivers AMD's are good as far as I know, there was fail a little while back but it is my understanding they have fixed the driver issue.(I could be wrong)
