Linux (especially Ubuntu and Mint) are working almost perfectly with common hardware and have a decent software library.

If you, however, want to play "high-end" games like Battlefield, Call of Duty et cetera, you would need to have a Windows OS on your computer.

 

I would rather safe some money for a windows license instead of going with linux in your case.

I found this to not be the case. I swapped out my G3258 for an i7-4790K, no problems. Then I swapped out my fried ASUS mobo for an MSI Z97S Krait, no Windows issues. Within a day of that, I swapped out my 4790K for a new one (lesson learned, kids: a $47 PSU is still a $47 PSU, even if it's discounted from $119) and did a clean, full-wipe reinstall with the same license as if it were a brand-new system. Still not a problem in sight.

 

Maybe I'm just lucky, or maybe Microsoft changed something in their authentication process?

My Windows disk is packed away, so it's possible I was handed a retail license, but I definitely asked for the OEM license and got a CD in a white envelope instead of retail packaging.

Entirely possible. I don't have the disc anywhere nearby to check, but it wouldn't be the first time I'd asked for one thing and Fry's had given me another.

I would grab the 860K unless, you plan to buy a i5 or i7 down the road?
