Its not 2x the performance-that's not how extra CPU threads work (another FYI, FX 8300 have 4 moduels, 8 threads/ALU).

At the end of the day, everything is relative to the cost and therefore the budget you are working within.

 

If you can get an i7 2600 (or better the k) and a board used for not much more than an 8300 or 8300+board, then it's worth it.. If you can't.. the intel is better but the AMD is ok.. All depends on your budget..

With i7 2600 you get 4 cores 8 threads, and those 4 cores 8 threads are far better than the 4 modules 8 threads/ALU of the FX 8300 in every task.

ofc its not 2x performance i think some 4 cores cpus can beat i7-2600 but price is ofc more expensive also

mhh yea 

paying is kinda critical right now but its not the real matter here right now. kinda wanna go used CPU and if lucky to get working used motherboard also or just new motherboard. I Kinda using it for everything some games and virtualbox.

actualy thought of it, but passmarks shows me i wouldn't get 2x more performance of current pc. i think 2500k is more for gaming

You won't get 2x the performance with an FX 8300 either.

That's kind of the problem, his current motherboard only supports CPU up to a 95W TDP. Making the FX 8300 pointless for him anyway since he doesn't want to overclock+he needs a new motherboard anyway.

The i7 has 4 CPU + 4 HT cores, so it is an 8 core CPU. As someone who went from an FX 6100 to an i7 4770k its the best switch ever. I completely fell for the more cores = better when I built my first my by far the i7 is the only way to go for performance. If you are only gaming there is no need to get anything above an i5 as most games don't use above the 4 cores anyways. Doing streams, multimedia, etc then you can get the use of the extra cores the i7 has.

That not how hyperthreading works.....it only boosts each core's performance by 40% (unless its a Pentium 4, that's only 20%).

even then, the i7-2600 is ALSO an 8 thread capable chip...the FX is also NOT even a true 8 core CPU in that it has 4 modules with only 1 floating point per module and one instruction decoder...but a pair of integer unit per module...that's why in the userbench i linked you can see slightly greater multi-core integer score but this can only go so far when you are crippled that much architecture wise...the i7 has SMT and it is a faster part regardless of the clockspeed.
