Hey guys, just a couple of quick questions about monitors and such.

1. What cable should i use for a 1440p monitor that can produce 144hz. (27 inch monitor)

DVI or DisplayPort 2.0 (ealier DP versions won't be enough)

2. Is it possible to change the resolution on a monitor E.G. If the game is not running too smoothly, lower resolution to from 1440p to 1080p to make it run better while still producing 144hz?

Yes, just use the in-game option to lower resolution and leave the refresh rate of your screen untouched in Windows

3. If it is possible to lower the resolution to get better frames what kind of harm is there?

No harm, just expect the image quality to be a  bit lower. Depending on how your screen will handle downsampling, it could be pretty ok if you're not sitting right next to it.

Thanks heaps in advance, i don't have my pc yet but i'm planning to buy the parts in a couple of weeks when i have the money. GPU MSI Geforce GTX980 TI.

Any recommendations to what i should will be a great help:)

1. I assume HDMI will work just fine, but I'd still use DisplayPort if possible

1. As @SaladFingers pointed out, DP is your best choice (or DVI)

2. In theory, it should work just fine if you switch to 1080p

3. Lowering resolution might help, but you'll probably be better off just turning graphics options down

So i guess instead of ultra high or something and that would fix any fps issues? And with the gtx980 ti would you think i would be able to max out some games and be able to use the 144hz 1440p to its potential?

Lowering settings usually gives the GPU some more room for extra framerate.

Not sure about the 980Ti's performance. You'll have to wait for someone with more info to answer that question

1. Alright no worries.

2. What would it do just to change in game settings and leave refresh rate out of it?

3. Hmm hopefully it would not too bad as i will be about 2 ft away as it would be and my desk as such.

hard to say, depends on the game. The 980ti is surely a beast, but 144hz @ 1440p is not a walk in the park either. I don't own it so I can't tell for sure, better look up some benchmarks or wait for someone that has it to chime in.

2. Nothing. Just leave the screen settings untouched was my point. When you first install your screen, you want to make sure it's set to run at 144hz (Windows will probably default it at 60hz...) and that's it, never touch that again.

Hmm no worries, it should be able to handle a couple of games like that, and if not I guess lowering the settings would still look just as nice as it would be on a 1440p monitor.

Yeah i was a bit weary about it running at 144hz but i guess i don't have to use that monitor at that refresh rate and lower it if it is too troubling?

Well, if it is having troubles maintaining 144hz rest assured it will run lower itself :) Some games allow you to set a framerate limit so you could experiment with limits to 120 or 90 etc, else you would have to change the Windows setting.

Just try everything until you get the experience you like. You can either lower the resolution the game runs at, or lower the graphic settings, or both, leaving your framerate untouched. That way you could see how far you need to lower things to get to 144hz. If you want more eye candy then you can sacrifice some refresh rate, so you can either set a cap within the game (if that option exists) or through your Windows or GPU drivers.

Yeah i get where your coming from, and i guess it makes it harder to physically test it all as i don't have it in front of me aha.

DVI or DisplayPort 2.0 (ealier DP versions won't be enough)

DisplayPort 2.0 does not exist; you mean DisplayPort 1.2. Also, the official limits of Dual-Link DVI are around 2560×1600 at 60Hz, and while overclocking can take you beyond, it should not be considered guaranteed to get 1440p 144Hz with DVI.

This is wrong. HDMI 2.0 is perfectly capable of 1440p 144Hz.
