is 1gb enough for modern gaming

maddogl

i know res is getting bigger and such but i am gonna be stuck with 1440 by 900 for a while so should i spend a bit more for a 2 gb card or save it for other upgrade. btw i was wondering as i have seen a 7850 i was gonna get but it's like £15 more for a 2 gb one

these are the ones i am on about

1gb: http://www.novatech.co.uk/products/components/amdradeongraphicscards/amdhd7850series/r7850-1gd5oc.html

2gb: http://www.novatech.co.uk/products/components/amdradeongraphicscards/amdhd7850series/r7850-2gd5oc.html

i know the 9000 series is around the corner but if they have totally different prices to what i am expecting this will be what i am to buy if this makes sence

main rig: http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/GFvH7P

next upgrades. h440 . 8320.  possible liquid cooling AIO

even tough for that res 1gb is enough as a person who owns 2gb and 1gb version of that card 2 is much more better choice

just to give you an example you cant max crysis2 at 1080p with 1gb card (you cap vram at 720p when its maxed) but you can max the game at 1080p with stable 60fps

you can max the bf3 with 64 player maps (it highly depends on cpu) with 1gb card

you can probably max bf4 with 1gb card as well

1gb card will be always vram limited in new games

You will be fine at that resolution for most games unless you play crysis or metro maybe bf3 or bf4.

I'm still using a 1Gb 560Ti and it's perfectly fine, even for most games 1080p. Of course, next time the 3Gb of the AMD cards will be a good thing, but currently I don't have much need for more than 1Gb.

You may as well get the 2GB version which is actually cheaper here http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00ACHDL5M/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_il_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1634&creative=6738&creativeASIN=B00ACHDL5M&linkCode=as2&tag=amzonuk-21 but if you plan to upgrade your monitor or play next gen games you will want the extra 1GB VRAM.

If you can afford the 2GB version I'd really recommend it. That being said, don't sweat it if you can't. You will be okay with 1GB of vram, especially at that resolution. Very few games would take use of more than 1GB, but it would be "future proofing" in a way, in case you would upgrade to 1080 or beyond.

Some games do really use more vram. I'm running 2GB cards and a heavily modded Skyrim can cause me to run out of vram quite easily, even at 1080p.

if you are not going to jump up to 1080p 1gb should be fine but 2gb will be alot safer since the new consoles are around the corner with tons of RAM games might get more RAM hungry

I have an manufacture overclocked 560ti 1gb and it still maxes out most games apart from games such as Crysis 2/3 or other games that are super demanding or are poor console ports. But if you can go with the 2gb then that will probably be the better choice.

You must take in mind that you will play far cry 3 15 hours max. Bf3 and or bf4 lasts longer.

I use about 1.5GB maxing out BF3 at 1080p. It would be beneficial to get the 2GB for the future.

so pay a little more and have a bit more future proofing is what you guys are saying?

Yeah. It's generally a good idea if it's not much more.
