Hello,

I am interested in buying a new X99 motherboard to pair with a 5820k, and I was wondering the differences between these two motherboards:

ASRock X99M Extreme 4 MATX Motherboard: http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/part/asrock-motherboard-x99mextreme4

MSI X99A SLI Plus ATX Motherboard: http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/part/msi-motherboard-x99asliplus

I would like to know what features I would be losing out on (or even posssibly gaining) by going with the ASRock MATX motherboard.

Thanks in advance

The MATX board has 2 more Sata ports. The MATX board can only support 64gb of ram instead of 128gb. You also loose a few sun ports

i like trains 🙂

the asrock has only 4 dimm slots, the msi has 8.

you are loosing expandability options, less usbs, but dual lan on the asrock.

It's up to you basically if you want more usbs and expansion slots or not

Both are good boards.

If you go with the ASRock, you lose

- 8 Total ram slots, as the ASRock only has 4.

- The MSI can support 3 way SLI I believe, while the ASRock only has 2 way

- The MSI has WAY more USB ports. Like a metric crap ton.

- The ASRock does not have any USB 3.1, so future proofing may not be as good

- the ASRock is colored, and may not match your build color

- both have M.2

Honestly, unless size is really important to you, I would just get the MSI one. Bigger and better, although the MATX board is still a good board itself.

IF you are going X99 in mATX, then you should definitely check out the ASU X99m-WS:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Asus-X99-M-Intel-2011-Motherboard/dp/B013WB33ES/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1455218440&sr=8-1&keywords=X99m+Ws

By far the best feature set for X99 in that form factor.

Well im not sure if I will ever get 8 sticks of ram, and I definitely won't go 3 way SLI so the only things I would really miss out on would be USB ports?

Unless you're dying for USB 3.1, then really the MATX board has plenty of spots for peripherals, you won't be needing like more than 4-6 USB ports I would hope, depending on what you actually do. I personally use 4.

Well I use 6 at the moment but the case would have 2, and the motherboard has 8 so I think I would be fine in that regard. Are there any advantages to USB 3.1?

More devices in the future will start to use them, and it's quite faster, so it's very good for future proofing.
