For most cases the i5 is the better bet. There's too many issues with the fx. Finding a decent motherboard, especially for the 8 core fx can be tricky. A lot of amd boards have inadequate voltage regulators which makes overclocking dangerous. They perform worse in almost every scenario, only if all cores are fully loaded does the fx pull ahead, and that doesn't happen often.

My rig:
CPU: i5 4690k 24/7 @4.4ghz (1.165v) Max 4.7ghz (1.325v) COOLER: NZXT Kraken X61 MOBO: Asus Z97-A   RAM: 16GB Crucial Ballistix Tactical   GPU: EVGA GTX 970 SSC   PSU: EVGA GS 650W   CASE: NZXT Phantom 530 HDD: WD Caviar Blue 1TB + WD Black 2TB

Hello,

First of, forgive me for asking something that's being asked before:

Fx-8350 or i5 6400?

Ty

Try again when Zen comes out.

No but seriously... Upgrade the 6400 to an 6500 (because 20 bucks more for a good clock boost), and you're set.

It will be even faster than an 4,7 ghz FX 9590.

AM3+ is just an 5 year old platform. Dont invest into that.

Yeah, you are right, I'm more familiar with intel nowadays and didn't even realised there could be such an old socket still out there to buy. I just thought AM3+ its something new, like intel haswell or something. Ok, so i5 to the rescue.

Thanks to all of you for your info!

If you want a solid PC to handle most kind of work with gaming go for i5 6400

but if you are going to use your PC to run special software or something that is optimize to use all 8 core fx 8350 will give you slightly better  performance like video rendering or something like that.

It totally depends on you , how you are going to use your PC

i5 6400 is best if you are going to play heavy games( today most of the games are not optimize to use more than 4 cores)or any rough use

but

for special cases or for special software that can use 8 cores Fx will perform slightly better than i5.
