Raid 5 question

Go to solution Solved by Spannerhands,

So do I have to back up the data and then restore it after I move the hard drives? And after I backup all the data how do I undo the RAID?

Have a look at this might help

Hi everyone, I am planning to make a media server pretty soon (3x3tb wd red in RAID 5), and was wondering if I ever decided to upgrade my computer or decide to move the raid array, would it be possible? Would I have to delete the info and restore it from a backup or can I just take out the harddrives and put them into the new system? If not is there any other way to do it? RAID 5 is notorious for slow write speeds and writing all that data might take a while.

This depends, what raid controller are you using on-board?

Ya I plan on using the onboard raid.

Well if you do decide to move it then you have to use the same controller type and sometimes even the same version of the controller (as that get complicated too) on the next system...

Is there a way to cancel the RAID 5 (restore it to normal function) before I move the hard drives, and then move the hard drives and reset the RAID or do I have to back up all the data, reset the hard drives, and then restore the data?

No sadly not possible...
