Thanks for this! :D

But I don't need more than a 650W for a  gtx 980?

No problem my friend! :D

Unless you want to got for SLI, 750-850W will be needed.

Hey guys,

I built my PC in June 2014 on a $1200 budget.  I was a noob at PC hardware then and just getting into LTT.

My specs are in my signature if you want to look :)

Anyways,  my question:

Is the GTX 660 outdated at this point?

It does what I need, but if not now, when should I update my graphics card.

Also,

My friend mentioned that a GTX 980 might not actually fit into my case...  Lol it makes me worried that I might not be able to actually upgrade anytime soon.

Thoughts?

It's pretty outdated, but if it's still enough for you than there's no reason to spend money upgrading it. Upgrade it when you need more performance.

I assume you have a K350, in which case you can fit any GPU you want that's <= 315mm (which is basically all of them).

Your case can fit the gtx 980 fine. You can add a card up to 12.4" or 31.5cm

If you're worried about it not fitting in your case just consider an R9 Nano which costs like $150 less yet performs similarly. Also, yeah it's outdated.

His case can fit a GTX 980.

Yes the GTX 660 is outdated. It's still usable if you don't mind lowering settings and in some games sub 60fps.

Whenever you're no longer playing at your desired settings and framerates.

Also the 980 will fit in that case.

I'm kinda an Nvidia fan so in all likeliness I'm not going to go AMD ;p  Lol but that's a suggestion.

So far I haven't had to turn down settings much.  Things run great for me.  I guess I just don't play so many graphics-heavy games

How much are you willing to spend on a new PSU? You'll need to change yours anyway. Because it does not have enough PCI-E connectors.

People are calling the 660 outdated... Well... I guess that is like calling the 750ti outdated? It is an older generation card but definitely not outdated for many applications.

edit: This is not directed at the OP but other who are replying and not giving a reason why they are calling the 660 outdated.

A shadowy flight into the dangerous world of a man who does not exist.

If you havent had to turn down settings in anything you play, and you're still happy with your card there's no reason to upgrade.  I was still using a gtx650ti until just about a year ago, and now someone else is still happily using it.
