Can't Find Server on Network

No. That's not how it should be at all. 

See, Windows mounts drives over a network with Samba. You have to install Samba on your server to get it working. Samba shares have specific names.

Here's an example of how my server is set up. I would use this:

net use z: \\192.168.5.10\storage /USER:Deb-Storage\tremor <password> /PERSISTENT:YES

However, the storage share on my server goes to /var/plex/media because that's where all my media is contained. The share name is storage, but the file path is completely unrelated to the share name.

You'd have to edit your samba configuration and add the share. Samba's configuration file is located at /etc/samba and it's name is smb.conf.

 

So here is my configuration so you know what I mean and what it looks like. Look at the very end for the list of shares:

So you should go into your server and type:

locate smb.conf #It'll be the first one it lists. Then type...

sudo nano /path/to/smb.conf #Then add the shares correctly...

Ignore the text after the #'s that look like comments because they are.

When I double click the code box with my samba configuration file text in it, it says it fails to load that content. If I double click the much smaller code box directly above, it works. 

I think the code editor is broken. It's a white background and seems to fail to load large portions of text. Just sayin.

Hello, about two weeks ago I set up a Debian file server using Samba. It's main purpose was to backup all my files so that I could upgrade to Windows 10 and do a fresh install. It was working great on Windows 7 and I pushed all my files onto it. I just upgraded to Windows 10 and I want my files back, but I my computer doesn't see the server on the network. If anyone has an idea of why this is happening, please send help. Thanks :)

Is the network recognized as a Home or Work network?
Is network discovery turned on?

 

When you say you don't see it on the network, are you just looking at the Network tab on Windows 10, or are you pinging the IP address of the server with ping on command prompt?

 

If you know all the information for the server, and the server is responding when you ping it, use the following command from a command prompt to manually mount the share on the server:

net use <drive letter such as z:, note theres no trailing /> \\<ipofserver>\<servershare> /USER:<servername>\<username> <password for user> /PERSISTENT:YES

So here's an example one that works:

net use z: \\192.168.5.15\server-storage /USER:DebianServer\vitalius duck$rN1ce /PERSISTENT:YES

That's the manual way of doing the Map Network Drive. If you don't want it to be persistent, then just put NO or don't put the /PERSISTENT:<wtv> at all.

if you can't figure this out..you could just setup a ftp server on the linux server..and transfer that way..I usually find ftp to be faster anyway

I had the share created already. I literally figured out what I was doing wrong right before checked to see if you responded. I hate myself for not realizing. It worked though so thanks!

I've reported this issue to IPS, so hopefully it will be fixed in an upcoming release.
