So I am planning on doing a passively cooled PC, because they are cool :3

My plan is to have the GPU BEHIND the motherboard, and I am not entirely sure how well an AFFORDABLE riser cable would do at this. What are my options here? The motherboard is mATX and the GPU would be going basically behind the PCIe slots. I might be able to cheat and use the second videocard slot, as I have two full speed 16x slots. This would take a couple inches off of the cable length...

But I will still need to make a somewhat lengthy run. I would probably buy an unshielded cable and put aluminum foil tape over it, I have found that foil tape makes pretty damn good EMI shields.

Would I see any performance or reliability issues with a cable of this length?

Some of the best risers are the professional ones form 3M which are what Stefan used in his build IIRC, shielding with foil or tape yourself doesn't work most times at least from what I've seen since most require so many layers for it to have an effect.

MNNPC tech makes some nice risers and a company called Li-Heat seems to have some pretty good ones:

Up to ~20 cm the ribbon based unnshielded cables works fine. With 5 layers of aluminium foil around each ribbon cable (my riser had for seperate on) I managed to get a 30 com long riser working on PCIe 2.0.

Be sure to set the PCIe signal deemphasise to the maximum (-6 dB) for my MoBo. But in rare situations it may help to turn it off (0 dB).

Mineral oil and 40 kg aluminium heat sinks are a perfect combination: 73 cores and a Titan X, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Oil

The riser cable is going to be the challenging part... Probably going to spend as much on the riser as I will cooling.

That's a shame...

But at least it will work.

By the way, how long has the riser to be?

Not completely sure yet. The GPU will be behind thr motherboard

If you use the last slot of the MoBo and put the card rigth behind, you can get away with a 15cm riser for 10$.
