Xeon Build 2.0 Code name Xenox.

Trey222

I wouldn't use ECC ram though it's usually always slower dude. Like, far slower. The chances are you won't ever need it either :)

Mind you I guess if it's cheaper...

That was what I was meaning to ask you. This CPU you bought, is it an ES? (Engineering Sample) ? or is it a regular model?

I've heard rumours that some of the ES are unlocked. I've never seen it proven, mind.

Yeah I think I may just stay with my non ECC RAM. Unfortunately it is not an ES. I was hoping it would be because I have I also have heard rumors (no evidence though) that they are unlocked. An unlocked Xeon would be amazing though.

The last part (R9 390) is coming tomorrow (as long as the snow storm does not delay it) then I should have it built by Wednesday. Hopefully I can get at least .2 GHz out of it. I see you have the same board, have you tried to OC it yet?

Glad to know. What did you set the baseclock to the first time you tried? Usually you can get about 105 on it. I have seen some go higher though.

Hey @Trey222, is the 2670 only compatible with X79? I'm looking to get one, but the board is as expensive (or more so) as the CPU..

I tried 107 I believe. But I since then realized that I needed to turn off the xmp. Just haven't tried it since. What ram did you get? This ares matches the color perfectly and the newegg guy recommended it as compatible.

I got a Kingston 8gb stick in black. I plan to upgrade to more in the future though. I have also checked and was told it was compatible.

It is LGA 2011 so it will work with X79 or the dual socket server boards. These chips are so cheap because they were supper popular in data centers 3 years ago and now everyone is upgrading so there are thousands of these used chips. Unfortunately there are far more of these Xeons than there are X79 boards so the price if the boards has gone through the roof. I got my chip for 65us and the X79 board cost 160. It is a bit strange having the motherboard cost 100 dollars more than the CPU but for under 300 the performance is AMAZING. Also the dual socket boards are super expensive.

You will be lucky to get any more than 101 bus speed if it's anything like my 8 core ES. Any more than 101 locked the board leaving it needing a CMOS clear. You can set it so that the turbo is always on though.

YESSSSSS!!!!  After about an hour of troubleshooting it POSTed. I think a few of the dimms are dead but I don't feel like returning it. For some reason it won't boot from a flash drive so I booted from my SSD which was on my 2005 Dell Inspiron so it was 32bit windows 10. However it runs. So tomorrow I will mess with it some more. In the 20 minutes before I had to go to work I was able to start up a game I played on my laptop.(some junky shooter game)  On the laptop it would run at about 10-20fps if I was lucky, but I was able to run it at over 700fps on my R9 390 xD

Well I am annoyed. The Motherboard is now refusing to boot to an OS and is not recognizing my two SATA drives. I am going to try to fix it Saturday, but if I can't I will have to return it and get a new motherboard a second time. Oh well at least I know it is the motherboard this time.

Thank you. The tube is supposed to let you see the coolant flow.

Bummer bro, have you had better luck since?

@online_olympian No luck. I have returned the board. I think I am going to get the Asus X79 Sabertooth because it is cheaper than the other ones.

If you want absolute and specific support for the Xeon on a desktop board dude you need Asrock or Gigabyte and you need to make sure your CPU is in the supported list.

Intel usually hand over the chipsets to companies like Super Micro who make ridiculously priced boards. However, Asrock have always been very 'pro Xeon' and usually include support for pretty much every Xeon they can get their hands on.

Is this the same CPU you used or am I missing something? It costs 1850€ here, this is about two salaries in Greece.

Lol?

Thats the one. :) I got mine for 110$ us in december, but I already had bought the board before the great chip exodus of 2015/2016. haha I got that intel board for $100 and it rocks. But like i said, my neighbor had 8 of them and had to rma 4... not a very good ratio for nib mobos..
