Hey Everyone,

i'm considering upgrading my CPU to get vt-d capabilitys and alittle more speed, i'm not sure if its worth it, so i wanted to get some input and see what everyone thinks, below are is my current setup, and below that is what im considering upgrading to, any input is greatly appreciated.

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UP4
CPU: Intel Core i5-3570k (Ivy Bridge)
Ram: 12GB DDR3 Memory
Main Disk: 120GB Kingston v300 SSD

Possible upgrade

CPU: Intel Core i7 3770
OR
CPU Intel Core i7 3770s

i looked at the 3770K but it does not support vt-d which is important as i would like to run an unraid setup on this pc for multiple vm's to easily switch from a windows machine to a linux machine.

Thanks!

If you can afford to I would look at upgrading to skylake and get a Z170 motherboard and a 6600k or 6700k

Get the 3770 as you probably have a good enough cooler for the non s version as you have a k series cpu. Also ivy bridge still kicks ass, i would not upgrade to skylake. The difference between the s and the non s is that the s is lower clocked and uses less power, useful for when you have limited cooling.

Right now i cannot afford a full upgrade, which is why im thinking CPU only, and it looks like the 3770 out benchmarks all of the amd's on the market and still kicks ass!

does anyone know what the main difference is between the 3770 and 3770s?

Yep i do, i actually have my 3570k overclocked to 4.7ghz with my current cooler, but im considering switching to an H110 GTX aio liquid cooler with the new cpu, as i wont be oc'ing it.

The 3770s runs at a lower clock speed than the normal 3770.  If you can find a 3770 I think you would be happy with it.  That's what I have, granted I'm not using it for the same thing but I can attest to it being a very capable cpu :)

What is your budget? I like the idea of your cooler upgrade. I dunno about the chip upgrade though.

3770k or a E3-1290v2 seem like the best idea to me if you can find them used cheap. If you can't find a really cheap one then I don't think I would bother...

right now i could get away with about $300, i know a 3770 is gonna run me about that, so that would mean leaving out the cooler upgrade.

i know from linus's videos, vt-d is required for video card passthrough using unraid, which is what i am wanting to do, this way i could use windows as my primary os, and pause the vm and switch to a linux vm for development, testing and whatever else i want to do, not to mention easily testing software.

if i could do all of the above with unraid on my 3570k then i would just upgrade the cooler to the h110 gtx and go at it, as this cpu really handles everything i want to do in terms of gaming, but it lacks vt-d which i think (think) is important.

Can you squeeze a budget of $500? You could have an entire new rig for that price. Leaving you two fully functional rigs.

i might be able to squeeze it, but i dont think i could squeeze a nice intel rig out with $500, if you have suggestions please feel free!

I PM'ed you one option. The other option is to build a nice Intel 2 core system for now and upgrade to a 4790k later on when you get the funds. That was the idea behind this build I built for my dad awhile back. This was done for under $600 and I was able to build it with color scheme and aesthetics in mind. If you can reuse your case, PSU, GPU, RAM etc... then you could even build a Skylake system if you can stretch the budget to 500.
