Getting back my OEM Windows licence key after reinstalling
4 minutes ago, Thiback said:Hello,
So a friend of mine dropped his HP Pavilion 14 n022nf, therefore Windows 8.1 no longer boots (it tries to recover for 10 mins, then BSODs before even making it to login screen). I installed Ubuntu on an USB drive, which boots and works fine. From there, I assumed that only his HDD died, and that I could replace it with an SSD (best solution for my careless buddy). I plan to reinstall Windows 8.1 on his device with an ISO on USB, but I am confused on whether i'll need to enter his OEM key, and if yes, on how to find the said OEM key.
Does it seems I've diagnosed the computer well so far ? Can I do that Windows reinstall on his laptop ? Or will he have to buy another Windows licence ?
Thank you in advance.
You can reinstall. The key is in a table in the UEFI and will be set automatically while installing Windows. You can even upgrade straight to 10
