Simple question!

Go to solution Solved by DocSwag,

The two gpus have to be the same card. You can sli a gigabyte gtx 970 with an msi gtx 970 but you can't sli an msi gtx 960 with an msi gtx 970. They have to be from the same family. Also, VRAM does not stack. As well, the two cards need to have the same amount of VRAM (you can't SLI a 2 gb gtx 960 with a 4 gb gtx 960, there are some exceptions, but it is pretty rare). If you want to do dual GPU the two GPUs have to be from the same family and have the same amount of VRAM.

Hello!

So i have a question!

If i want to have two graphics cards do they have to be the same!?

So if like i have now a MSI GTX 960 2gb and i buy a GTX 970 4gb

Will it work ok together or one of them wont work?

Or I have to get another MSI GTX 960 2gb?

Also, will it go together as 4 gb if i have two 2gb and 6gb if I have 2 and 4gb cards?

Thank you!

In addition, right now if you have two of the same gpu's the RAM won't stack. You'll still effectively only have as much vram as a single card.

My Build:

If you want to let them work together then you'll need to use NVidia's SLI technology, which requires you to have two identical graphics cards, like for example two GTX 960s 2GB.

Generally speaking, yes they need to be the same model.

Though there are exceptions (e.g. 7970 can crossfire with 280x)

No, you will only use the VRAM of one card (2GB)though Direct X 12 will apparently allow you to use both (4GB) when it becomes a thing.

Almost as cool as my temps

Interested in computer architecture? Still in middle or high school? P.M. me!

I love computer hardware and feel free to ask me anything about that (or phones). I especially like SSDs. But please do not ask me anything about Networking, programming, command line stuff, or any relatively hard software stuff. I know next to nothing about that.
