I'm trying to build a few workstations for some buddies of mine, and so far I've planned out one variant of the workstation, dubbed "The Standard Piece of Crap"

Here;s the link to it:

It's meant for pretty much making spreadsheets and stuff that's not too demanding. The power supply isn't the bomb dot com. Or at least it isn't yet....

But the real question is: Can I just stick an SSD, maybe 8 more GBs of RAM, and put an AiO cooler on that CPU and call it a computer for programmers?

I have damn near no experience coding and and a total cubik rube when it comes to designing workstations, but it kinda makes sense just to OC the hell out of that CPU and see if it'll compete with an i7.

Also I'll put a better power supply in the upgraded workstation.

My train of thought is that it would be less costly just to buy a good cooler than to buy a $250-$1000 processor.

Feedback would be great.

Thanks

For standard MS office, an SSD is the best thing to go with. You'll be fine if it's not game coding or 1,000,000 lines long. Even then, an SSD is the most important component in those examples.

If you can extend your budget, I'd recommend getting a slightly better power supply. Maybe something 80+ Gold. The better the PSU, the longer a PC has a chance to survive a long time. I also recommend the SSD.

These aren't gaming builds. These types of PC's are what the CX series are made for.
