Is PRIME95 back in business and safe again? I know for a while it was causing problems on it's own.

You already have this thread going: http://linustechtips.com/main/topic/536761-system-shut-down-hard/

It's probably your power supply or motherboard. Hard power loss is almost always due to power, and it's either your PSU not able to supply stable power or your motherboard not able to regulate it.

Has been fine for ages.

Maybe it's with certain hardware like Skylake or something, but I know I have heard about it causing problems multiple times within the past year.

If your computer hard powers off or resets, PRIME isn't going to tell you anything.

If your OC was unstable you would get some kind of error that causes Windows to BSOD because that's how instability in your CPU or memory creates a problem. However, because your system is straight up cutting power, that is not the case. Your system is cutting power because either your PSU is bad, or your motherboard is bad. If the odds were really against you then it could be that your CPU is bad, but your need to start by trying a new PSU. If the same thing happens, then you need to RMA your motherboard. If the same thing happens, then you need to RMA your CPU. If the same thing happens then you need to seek shelter because the universe wants you screwed.

yeah the Universe is really giving it to me these days... wish this all happened around Black Friday..

rereading there ASUS Email and they want a deposit of 239.99 for a new board... then they will send back my old one after its fixed, which was NOT explained to me on MOnday when I called for a advanced RMA..

So its just easier to buy a new Z97 at this point WTF

I ordered the XFX 850w Gold this morning with new SATA cables

Prime95 makes use of extended instruction sets and produces more heat than other stress testing software. That's all. It's the most stressful thing you can do to your CPU, but in no way is it broken. It just exposes vulnerabilities that nothing else does.

Their RMA process isn't the most friendly IMO, but it does work. Years ago I sent them a dead Rampage II Extreme and they "fixed" it by sending me a new board. The reason they take the deposit is if they find damage by you they charge you for the replacement, but if they find defect they replace it and refund your deposit.

yeah he explained that... I was under the impression since this will be 2nd RMA, they send a new one and I send in broken one... cheaper to buy a new board then go through all this head ache.. I dont have 239.99 right now thats why i am upset over this

might do regular RMA thats only 17.00 for shipping my end. have to think about this more

Only first gen Haswell chips had a problem with Prime95.

I wasn't trying to say that the software itself was broken.  I just know I heard somewhere that it might not be safe with certain hardware because it pushes it too hard and has a chance of damaging it (or something to that extant).  So I guess the problem would be with the hardware and not Prime95, so you guys would be correct.

Yup, and the issue was only on Haswell.  Even Haswell-E isn't affected by it.

How can you say the system PSU or anything is bad, i have use prime95 and i do crash too, but i have been using this computer 24/7 for years without any crash while gaming at ultra setting most of the time. its easy to blame hardware when actually is often not the case.
