1U Server SuperMicro X6DVL-EG2

I got a 1U server last year for free from a previous coworker who goes out scrapping. It is my understanding that there are quite a few socket 604 CPU's out there, but motherboards are only compatible with a select few. There's no way I could drop two of the newer quad core socket 604 CPUs into this mobo, is there? If all I'm limited to is the existing single core CPUs, running this thing isn't worth the electricity cost.

I forget the CPUs that are in there, I'd have to power it on again and get into the BIOS.

Don't even Try. These pull lots of power and aren't wornit it for any running server.

This board looks like it takes the old cpu's with pentium 4 era xeons(think slow)

Appreciate the Input. I knew when I saw the date listed in the BIOS as well as the CPU model that it would be a waste of electricity. Still cool to tinker with through. Perhaps I'd have better luck finding some three or four generation old Intel server hardware on eBay or Craigslist.

@JohnnyGrey If you're looking for an old 1U server to tinker with that won't break the bank and kill your electric bill then go grab an old Dell CS-24 off eBay for relatively cheap. It's only a single PSU but it holds 4 hot-swap 3.5" drives and 2x quad core CPUs (I recommend L5420 because they are cheap, plentiful, and use less power than the E and X equivalents). Throw in 16GB of DDR2 ECC RAM and a Dell H700 RAID controller and you're in business. The IPMI sucks compared to the DRACs but since you'll be using it at home you won't care.

I just had a server shipped from a data center out in Chicago last month with basically the same hardware that would fit in a CS-24, would have been cheaper to just send it to you so you could salvage it since nobody wants old Xeon quad-core CPUs these days (and we have a ton of them).
