in a new build i would recommend Intel.

For video editing, of course

but since the i5 section of intel are very good in price to performance i would pick them for gaming too.

The fx processors on amd site are crap to much power consumption to less performance(only good for virtualisation)

and Phenom II is pretty old with high TDP and compared to newer Intel side bad performing.

as mentioned already in this thread, there is already a thread about this topic: http://linustechtips.com/main/forum/community-portal/general-discussion-offtopic/10120-intel-vs-amd . but what it comes down to is what you need. if you are on a strict budget amd can be a good option for a processor, but if you got some cash to throw around go intel, they have better performance per mhz than amd right now by far. but are a little more expensive as well.

personally i love them both, and think they both have their place. as i said, it just depends on what you need. i know that this isn't the most helpful advice in the world, but it is the facts, it is a tossup until you know what you need. (btw intel is actually better at video encoding unless you are thinking of an apu, which is a cpu but not the same thing as a cpu, and doesn't actually count for much if you have a decent quality discrete video card. amd does have the better apu chips right now, but unless you are using onboard video, that hardly makes a difference.)

How about an Intel AMD build off. Where builds are submitted comprising of parts from the NCIX website not totaling over 1k and all in the same case withe the same thermal solution and same power supply (Hey do you think corsair would sponsor?)

Only builders can vote and only for the side they submitted to. Linus then chooses two builds from the top ten to build and benchmark.

I think currently they are about equal AMD's current line up of CPU's are competitive but not competitive enough the FX8320 and FX8350 come close to the 3570K and suppas it in multi threaded applications so it really depends what you need and you budget

it you are just gaming a 3570K is the best option but you wouldnt do too bad with a current gen AMD chip

but if your gaming and doing things like rendering AMD are a far better solution to Intel at that stage the price difference make AMD by far the better option

if your in the budget end of it so like i3 or Sandy bridge pentium an FX4300, FX6300 or an APU out perform intel in the same price bracket

so really for most people they are more or less equal unless for what ever reason you need a 3770K or a 3930K but at a budget AMD are streaks ahead

give a man a gun he robs a bank, give a man a bank he robs the world

i have to be honest' date=' i love them both. but i also love both nvidia and ati (yes i know ati is owned by amd), it is the dynamic of competition that keeps pushing the line. i have been let down for the last few years by amd cpu tech because they just haven't done anything particularly good, but i still find amd to be a good choice when it comes to budget builds. but on the high end intel wins hands down. btw for those harping about the amd 8 core procs, you should keep in mind that each core is crippled by sharing cache with another, it is essentially amd's version of hyperthreading. and a 6 core "core 7" intel processor shows up in windows as 12 cores because of hyperthreading. amd's version of it is a slight bit more effective in some ways, but the much larger amount of cache in intel processors make them excellent for intensive linear tasks, like photoshop, 3d rendering, and video editing. but for gaming that edge is a little less important, although intel does have a better architecture over all that can squeeze a little more performance per mhz out than amd even in a random non linear environment like a game. on the low end though amd generally provides more performance for the dollar, and is still a good choice for people who want a computer that has good performance at a good price, but are not "hardcore" gamers/enthusiasts and do not need anything excessive. in summary both amd and intel put out good technology, and they both have their niche, it all comes down to what you actually need. (i forgot to mention that amd also has an excellent scheme for upgrades, making it pretty easy to put a new chip into an old motherboard, although their most recent fx series is no longer compatible with am2/am2+ boards, the athlon II chips are compatible with those boards and am3/am3+ boards)[/quote']

Very detailed reply, it is very true, 8 cores doesn't mean better, it means 8 cores. Intel could have 4 cores and AMD could have 8, but if intel's have more power, it will perform better at certain tasks.

intel is better. fx chips are retarded both bulldozer and piledriver. sad but true. I loved my 1090T back in the day

Did you sell your PD?

Actually, these 2 brands have their pros and cons.. And their new piledriver and bulldozer core are not ultilize in a lot of application today, future computing will need this architecture :-) all the way, do not fight each other, just respect each other... for those who do not have enough money, go for AMD, and for those who is superbly rich, Intel is for you... and, don't compare AMD to Intel which have more cpu pin than AMD...

I prefer Intel because their lithography is far smaller than AMD resulting in less chips that are defective, less heat produced by the CPU and power consumption. But if you are building a really tight value PC, AMD has a really good integrated graphics.

If you are planning on keeping the same config then buy an i5, currently better then anything AMD can offer, If you think you might do a rebuild in a year or so and you feel like an AMD chip then do it, what ever makes you happy. But at the end of the day Intel currently rules over AMD.

Ive been using a AMD computer for a few years now, its fine i do gaming with it and i have never encountered a problem :D, i have experienced a intel machine before but i didnt really like it, to me its just a personal liking.

The thing is that the highest CPU AMD has is intented to be between a i5 and a i7. If you go for high end you should go with intel 100%. AMD also is lightyears ahead of Intel for IGPU. Intel is definetly better as of now but I'm no intel fanboy I'm gonna have no trouble switching to AMD if they come out with a better product.

I use an AMD FX CPU right now, its doing great but with Intels Hasswell coming up and AMD stuck at piledriver I think the difference is getting bigger... But hope AMD stays so it keeps intel sharp and keeps the prices normal for us ...

I have a theory about this, I'll keep it to myself unless you're really interested.

It all comes down to the relative price point and usage really.

When it comes to gaming, the 3570k is one of the best units you can get, in terms of both performance and value, the locked alternatives aren't bad choices either, considering they are slightly cheaper. However, if you are looking into the ~$100 market, the FX-4300 isn't a bad option either, slightly faster than the i3 3220, with the option of overclocking. With the lower end market ($50-100), the SB/IB Pentiums are most likely your best bet (note: most games hardly utilize 3-4 cores, so don't bother going with a hexacore if you're just playing games).

When it comes to more multithreaded applications like video editing and such, then the Piledriver series all perform very well - at least for their respective price points. However when you look into more higher-end, expensive options units like the i7 3770k and 3930k do outperform them.

Yeah @Christoi , it all comes down to the price point really , that's how it always been with AMD and intel , one side wins certain price ranges and the other claims other price ranges ,but overlapping does occasionally occur where an equally good choice is available from either side at the same price point .
